I'm a fisheries biologist, not that that really gives me any credibility since anyone can claim that but the fish is most likely a green sunfish, the other alternative is a hybrid sunfish (cross between bluegill and green sunfish). Warmouth are similar in body shape but diff. colors.

A bluegill would need to be about 18" long to have a mouth that big! It's definitely a green sunfish. Man, I'd love to haul in an 18 inch Bluegill, I'd be famous and stuff.

There are no species of perch in Texas. Walleye are perch and there are some in Texas. Never caught one though.

Looks like Flathead bait to me, but it is a Green Sunfish. Biolgically/Scientifically speaking, that fish is not a 'perch' but a sunfish. Most folks have called bluegills, redears, greens, pumpkinseed, red-breast, longears, warmouth, etc. perch with it being a 'slang' or common name for those species, however, they are all sunfish, including the black basses and white & black crappie.
But, heck, it sure is fun 'perch-jerking' some days isn't it!!
Carry on!

There are no species of perch in Texas. Not native ones anyway, TPWD stocked quite a few lakes and ponds with Walleye, Sauger and Yellow Perch. In fact the local TPWD stocked pond by me has Yellow Perch in it. And we all know Lk Meredith has nice 'Eyes in it. Drives me nuts when people call Sunfish "perch". Then again, I'm from the great white north. Yeah anyway, that is a Green Sunfish, they get decent sized and are a blast on ultralight tackle fished like LMB.
