I recently have started making crankbaits out of balsa. I'm ready to start painting them and need to know what is the best paint (enamel, vinyl?). I have painted some before with enamel and when I added the topcoat, it melted the colors and they just ran together. Looking for help!!!!

The paints you choose will make up a system of chemically compatable products. First, you need a good clear base to seal the wood - probably the same clear you'll use for topcoat. I use solvent based vinyl for pigments, but there's water based acrylics out there that are more appropriate for hobby artists. Both are compatable with 2-part epoxys that you'll want to use for the top coat. IMO, I'd stay away from laquer unless you want your whole system to be laquer. Same with enamel. One of the drawbacks with laquer is that it's not the most durable finish out there, especially in high heat, marine applications.
We have a lure buiding section here at the TFF (sub of General Equipment Discussion) with quite a few talented "baitheads" who don't mind sharing.

I use Createx paints for all of my air brushing, its a water based paint.
It comes in all the colors and you can easily re duplicate any lure out there with it. I dip the bait for my clear coats/seal

Do you use epoxy for a topcoat on the Createx paint?

Do you use epoxy for a topcoat on the Createx paint? Createx is a good place to start... It is water based and easy clean up. Createx sprays pretty well through a .3mm airbrush.... but some of the pearls and opaques get a little thick and need to be thinned.... the transparent colors work great. Make sure you heat set the Createx with a hair drier before applying any topcoat. Epoxy works great..... as long as it has a 20-30 minute work time.... Topcoating is not a job for 5 min epoxy. Createx also works well with moisture cure finishes such as Dick Nite's. As stated above.....Your best source for information is http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/forum/13-hard-baits/Click on search and have fun........
