I met him at a boat show, a really down to earth guy.

I'm sure a little help from his dad didn't help. I may be wrong, but I think Roland Martin won his last event on Champlain. And of course he lives on Okeechobee...

For my money Roland Martin and Kevin Van Dam are the two best tournament fishermen of all time.

Rick Clunn is a great fisherman, too. I just think Roland and KVD are a notch above the others. I read Jimmy Houston's book, and he says Roland Martin is the best fisherman he's ever seen. The way he put it was that Roland seemed to have a "sixth sense" that most people don't have when it came to fishing.

19 wins, 19 seconds...I think a lot of younger guys forget how great Martin was and base their opinions of him on his TV show.

Dang, the man is almost 70 years old now.

Having said that, I still don't think anyone on this forum wants any part of fishing against him for money.

I never really knew about Roland from his fishing days. Then the other day I made a comment about him around my BIL, and he mentioned how he used to be a great tourney angler.

Great as in nine BASS Angler of the Year titles.

How he got his start is an interesting story. He went to a BASS tournament but was so strapped for money that he had to sleep in his car. After seeing the huge sacks brought in by guys on a lake where he had struggled he was so discouraged that he decided to quit and go home because he thought he just didn't belong...he wasn't good enough to compete with the big boys. Ray Scott saw something in him and talked him into giving it another shot. I think shortly after that he finished second on Toledo Bend...and the rest, as they say, is history.

Side note...Scott Martin is actually named after Roland's friend and the guy who talked him into persevering, Ray Scott.

I've had the good fortune to fish with both Roland and KVD and there is definitely something special about both of those guys. The operate on different level than the rest of us.

Scott talks with his dad a lot and bounces ideas off him and gets a lot of encouragement from him. Although his dad could hook him up with a world of contacts, he really wants to succeed on his own and he's worked really hard to find the fish by himself and through his own contacts. While having one of the greatest fishermen ever as a dad really gave him a head start on fishing, I think it grates on him a bit that some people will always assume that the fish he catches are the result of daddy's help. I guess that's the mixed blessing of all children of wealthy and/or famous parents. Both Roland and Scott fish a bit differently and are tough competitors--I bet they'd make one heck of a fishing team.
