there is nothing set in stone , it is all personal preference. I use a TFO TiCrx 5wt for the majority of my carp fishing. If there are some bruisers I move up to a 7 or 8wt

I use 5/6wt, its enough to handle them and when you get a big one on they make you work for it. As for the brand much like Scott said its personal preference.

If you don't mind me asking, what brand are you currently using and how would you critique it?
I have owned Sage in the past. But never used anything else to compare them to. Didn't use them for carp rather mostly for trout in CA. 2 & 4 wt.

Im using an Okuma set up i got from academy, fairly inexpensive as far as fly rods/reels go.

Don, what is your casting style? Do you prefer a soft action, mod fast, super fast? Finding what action works for you is more important than what brand it is. Go to Cabelas or sportsman's finest and cast a few rods and see what suits your style.

This isn't going to sound well.
Soft action because I want the rod to do some of the work, not just drag.
I like the way it feels at the tip when loading the rod. It helps me to get distance and feel it helps my presentation.
I haven't FF since 1992.

the albright stuff is really good for the price, TFO is another great option. don't buy a cheap flyline

true carp anglers fish with only tonkin cane posers who normally fish with bait but pretend to fly fish for carp once in a while generally use whatever they found on ebay

Yea because the more expensive your rod is the better fisherman you are...

I have always used a TFO signature ($109)rod, a lamson konic reel (about $120) and SA GPX line(about$80) you can go a lot cheaper than this but it is a solid setup. I would probably get the camo colored line to avoid spooking the carp when sight fishing, but I mostly sightcast to carp clooping on bread with my breadfly

My Sages were gifts from my Grandfather, he always did like quality.
I've also seen a few carp anglers bait an area then FF for the carp.
