Depnds on where you are you going to fish it at? If in brush you can fish straight down in amongst all the branches or swim it just above the pile. On bridge pilings either straight down or cast it out past the colum then click the bail closed and let it fall in a pedulum motion past the piling. You can shoot a dock with it or you can fan cast a area and use it as a search bait and make short hops with it on the way back and most crappie will hit it on the fall like a bass does. You can swim it along very slowly next to the bottom and you can also use it with a bobber to keep the same depth and area with it. You can use a jig just like any other lure for bass. Many different ways to use a jig. As far types and makers their is all different kinds and bariations there as well. I think the hand tied hair jigs are pretty good especially in the winter months and the rubber or plastic in the rest of the year, but i have caught them on both no matter the season. Best if you have no idea then just pick up a crappie kit at bass pro to start and pick up some bobby garland bodies there as well then ask some of the hand tied jigs on here as far as good color combos that wotk for others and go from there. Pick natural colors for baitfish like shad and such. Pick up some darker colors as well for the darker days and waters and of course some with chartuese in it. Or you can spend the money with a guide for a half day and he can give you a instructional trip on the use of different jigs. Or go with a person that only fishes with jigs and see if you can tag along with them for a day after the crappie. Hope it helps but again with jigs there is a lot of different ways to use them and like any other fish depending on the season. Mark

I'm not sure what you call a "Jig" but what I do is I work mine two different ways. 1. Once tied on I dropped mine straight down slowly gently snatching it up about five or more inches and then letting it sink another three feet or so before I do my snatch and sink again. I move to different locations doing this until I have caught all the Crappie in the area. That last part is more dream than history. 2. I suspend my choice of "Jig" on about four to five feet of light pound test (4 to 8 lbs). This I tie to a smallish swivel and tie the swivel to my line whose strength does vary. Just above the swivel I place a small bobberdepending on the "Jig" size. This rig I use for shallow water. I pitch it out and draw it back to me in jerking motion and stop and let the "Jig" settle. I repeat this until I have retrieved my line. and do the same thing over again reminding my self to not move to fast on my retrieve.
Most of what I do I have learned from reading what these guys and gals write here on the TFF. I have read what they had to say for some years before I posted anything. Honestly, what I wrote above is how I caught the Crappie me, my wife, and my daughter had for dinner today. Stay true to the Thump.
