I have a 2001 Merc 150 EFI and the trim is not working. Here is what happens. The motor will operate speratically. I can push the up and down trim button on the motor, throttle and in the bow of the boat and nothing. I have replaced both relays and they make a clicking sound when I push the trim button. I get a constant 12 volts to both up and down wires when I push the trim button. I sent the trim motor and had it tested and it test fine. Makes no sense to me on why its not working. any help would be appreciated

Check the grounds. Are you saying you had 12v to the motor wires when trim switch is activated?

Take a test light or volt meter and back-probe the power wires going to the trim motor [after relay] and see what you get when butons are pushed. If you get voltage your trim motor has seen better days. I have good complete trim systems and trim motors if you find that you need one.

I thought trim motor also. I put a new trim motor on about 6 months ago due to the original one stopped working. I just sent the new motor back to where i purchased and they stated the motor tested fine

The trim motor works on a switching ground, the relays do this action. They have to be grounded, usually the relays will not click if they are not grounded, you said they clicked, so they must be grounded. When you test the out put of the relays , and your ground moves from wire to wire, then your wires to the trim motor are failing in the harrnes or there is a intermittent open in the brushes, armorture, windings , who knows. But your trim motor sounds like the problem.

JD you should be able to activate the trim motor by disconnecting the harness from the relays and doing a direct jumper wire to the battery. That will tell you right quick if the motor is a problem. Make sure to swap the ground and hot wires after a few seconds so you can see that it runs in both directions. If not then you have a motor problem. Bazz
