I stood on the bank of the Colorado river just up stream from Bend on Wednesday (27th). There is an old steel post at the waters edge on my "beach" that is my water level marker. The river was then at its ususal, every day, all year long level. Not high, not low - just where it always is. This rain will bring it up a foot or two and by mid next week it'll be back at the base of that post. From the point of view of lake buchanon/gormons fallS/white bass run this rain will probably not bring mass schooling fish up out of the lake, You'll need more and longer rains to get that. But there will be some sandies moving if they can just get up out of bucanon..

We had 4 inches on our river place in Mills county and the river was running about 14 feet above normal about 10am this morning. All our tanks and government flood control dams are full and running as well as the major creeks and Pecan Bayou. Lake Brownwood was down some so I'm not sure how much will come from there but the river will be running several days here so maybe they will get some at Buch.

our lease is the entire property between sulphur springs and barefoot, and things, even last year with the water low, werent all that bad. THis year is looking better, as the river is up and flowing good, especially this morning. I had some pics of cherokee creek when it hit flood stage today, and it will help out Buch pretty good, hopefully will be back up over 1000, its been around 997 lately.

Buchanan is very low and there is still a huge sand bar between the lake and CBSP preventing WB in the lake from running up the river. There are some WB that stay in the river year round, so they do provide a limited run, but it's nothing like when the masses of fish can make it up from the lake. Hopefully we'll get enough rain to flood the sand bar and enable a good run, but historically we don't get enough rain and run off between January and March to make that happen at the current lake level. So, bottom line, don't get your hopes up for a good run at CBSP this year. It's just not very likely without rain of Biblical proportions in the watershed within the next several weeks. You'll be better off going after them in the Tow area.
BTW, even with the lake being low, it's not uncommon for sections of the river to hold water behind natural dams (pools if you will) above CBSP and Bend. Therefore, you can't necessarily judge the level elsewhere in the river or lake based on the level in an isolated pool upriver.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've fished CBSP for a long time and that's just how it is some years.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've fished CBSP for a long time and that's just how it is some years. Lake is up 3 ft in 2 days and is still rising. River levels remain elevated with high flows. The lake as of 9:45 Saturday morning is at 999.38 it came up almost a foot overnight. It will be above 1000.0 ft by today. Things are looking very good. The river peaked around 16000 cfs. That should change how that little sand bar looks!

Yes, I saw that and it's good news. I've been told by someone very familiar with that area that it probably needs to get back to 1010 or more to flood the bar. (We're talking about a huge sand bar here--100 yards long or more, so it's not like it's a stable and predictable feature. Hopefully flood conditions help to open it up, but it's just as likely to deposit even more sand on it.)
Just for curiosity, I pulled the historical monthly average level for Buchanan. This month's average level should come in around 998 including the recent rain that should take it over 1000 to end the month. The historical average for Jan is ~1012 (about what's needed to overcome the sand bar), so this month's average is still about 14 feet low. The average rise from Jan to Mar is only 0.61 feet (not typically a rainy time of year). The most it's ever risen from Jan to Mar during the past ~70 years is 11.55 and 6.11 feet in '97 and '68, respectively. So, statistically speaking, it would have to be a record breaking year to get back to average level by March. It's a long shot, but not impossible considering it's an El Nino year.

Checked the Colorado at our place west of Goldthwaite again this afternoon about 2:30pm and it's still running 9 feet above normal. We are 1/2 mile downstream from where the Pecan Bayou feeds into the river so I am not sure if we are getting river or bayou water or both. Like I said yesterday everything is full here and the seeps and springs are running so I look for the river to stay above normal for awhile yet. Sure would be fun to be able to get back on Buchanan this summer.

Just got back from our place across the river from CBSP, the river was up about 8 feet. The water was flowing fast & very muddy. It looks like more rain in the forecast for the middle part of next week. Hopefully this will continue to bring the lake up...
