I was just at Academy and found the Ugly Stick rod and reel combo for 39.99 is this a good buy for a rookie? I was told I should consider picking up a 6'6" medium heavy Ugly Stick but wanted to get the opinions of others first. Thanks in advance for any advise.

I have several Ugly Sticks in various lengths. To me they are probably one of the best low-end rods money can buy.

Thanks, I'm starting out a little cheap with my first rod because I need to build all my gear up. I just want to ensure I'm getting enough quality until I can get a more pricey rod.

Ugly Sticks are one tough rod for sure, but they are a little on the heavy side. Like my wife says.. Go Ugly early and you won't go home alone thumb

I use them for catfishing, they can handle any size fish and if a big one drags it into the lake when your not looking thier not that expensive to replace.

I have a medium light striper special Ugly Stick that landed a 39# flathead with no problem.

A bad day on the lake is much better than a good day at work!

when i was in college that was the first rods i bought. I still have alot of them and still use them here and there. They are the only rod so far that i havent broken one yet. Good rods for a budget.
