Hey guys.....I've been a member of the Texas Hunting Forum for quite some time now, but I just registered on here. I've been an avid bass fisherman for most of my life. A friend and I, who are both college students, are planning a trip to Lake Amistad during Spring Break (early March). I would love to hear any suggestions you guys might have for us. Neither one of us has ever fished Amistad, but we are looking forward to it. Where do yall recommend staying (hotels, cabins, B&B's, etc.....)?? which marinas to use?? strategies?? Anything would be helpful. Thanks guys. I appreciate it and look forward to reading your replies.

First recommend going to Falcon instead and stay at either Oso Blanco in the front side rooms or Beacon Lodge in one of the cabins. But if going to Amistad stay at Amistad Lodge and be sure to get the latest info from Carl and his folks.

Amistad that time of year is unbelievable for numbers. If you want a lot of bites vs big fish, launch out of Box Canyon and run-up the cuts on the Mexican side past marker 17. Beat the banks and bushes with a weightless Senko and expect triple digit days. Most of the fish will be in the 1 to 3 pound range but to me it's a lot of fun.

I've been doing that for a lot of years and only have a few big fish to show for it using this technique. My guess is they're are so many little fish they beat the big girls to the bait. If size is more important, move out a little deeper and throw some big swim baits or jigs -- you'll give-up a ton of bites but there are a lot of big fish in that lake.

I agree with Limits Falcon is a much better option for big fish. But for numbers, Amistad rocks in the spring,

Amistad would be my choice also. I agree with JPost with one exveption. I always stay on the US side. I always do very well there so I see no need to cross over.

Eland Slayer,

Here are the regulations I found for fishing the Mexican side via TP&W website.

On the Texas side of the lake, all species are managed under current statewide regulations. For recreational anglers fishing Mexican waters, a Mexico fishing license is required for everyone in the boat. Mexico boat permits are no longer required. For information on Mexico's fishing regulations, visit the National Aquaculture and Fishing Commission (CONAPESCA) website.

Mexico licenses can be purchased in Del Rio at Amistad Marine (Highway 90 West, 830/775-0878) or Fisherman's Headquarters (Chevron at the intersection of of 90 & 277 N, 830/774-5670.

Thanks

70 buck for a yearly license if you buy it locally. I guess you can save some money going direct, I'm sure someone will chime-in.

Amistad's the place to be right now...I would suggest moving out into the mouths of coves or close to that and find some long tappering points or ledges. Amistad has got plenty of them to offer too. Them big girls are hanging out in that deeper water just waiting to move up. I'd throw flutter spoons, heavy spinnerbaits, and/or a drop shot if things get tough. I agree you'll probalby miss out on the triple digits.... But it only takes one giant to make the trip worth it. Go big or go home on amistad!

Nothing like a thread being hijacked by the Falcon Mafia. The man asked about Amistad, not Falcon. If you can't answer his question, don't post.

I'd recommend taking Anglers Lodge up on his offer. He knows his stuff. Good luck down there!
