What does the State Record Have to do With skill or luck.If it was skill We would have a new record every day.I love Bass fishing and there is more skill then luck but the qustion was stringer tournaments VS Big Bass.

Usually in tournament fishing the guys not holding a check at the end of the day are the ones calling the other guys that are holding one lucky.

Those guys that prefish and work their butts off to find fish sure are lucky. its like they get lucky all the time.grin

one makes his own "luck" in the world, preperation and hard work puts one in postion to be "lucky". typically lazy people with out a good work ethic are the ones that call succesful people "lucky" .... and I was just making a point, the billions of casts made on Fork by excelent anglers and the state record was caught crappie fishing on a minnow, thats all bud!

Big fish are luck, however, you can definately be a "big fish" fisherman

Al Linder says "90 percent of the fish are caught by 10 percent of the fishermen". I dont think its that high in bass tournaments, but the cream does seem to rise.

That was a great story. I love questions like this one.

The Club I was a part of in Omaha has kept stats since 1992. 7 events a year for 18 years, 126 tournaments. In those years there have been 43 different winners of those 126 events, but only 8 anglers have won 5 or more events and have 75 of the 126 wins. 53 different anglers had 2nd place finishes, only 7 with 5 or more runner up spots with 57 of the 126. 55 different anglers had 3rd place finishes, with 8 with 5 or more, those 8 had 57 of the 126 3rd place finishes. 52 Anglers claimed a Big Bass award with again, 7 claiming 5 or more, those 7 taking 49 Big Bass awards from the 126 events.

If you only look at those that had at least 5 wins, 5 2nds, 5 3rds or 5 Big Bass awards, there are only 13 anglers on that list. So expand the list to include all the finishes of anyone that has 5 awards in any 1 category, those 13 anglers. Those 13 anglers, over 18 years of Club fishing in a Club that had between 30 and 42 members per year, claimed 91 of the 126 wins (72.22%), 74 of the 2nd place finishes (58.73%), 65 of the 3rd place finishes (51.59) & 62 Big Bass Awards (49.21%). Overall those 13 anglers took home 292 of the possible 504 Awards for this Club, or 57.94% & 230 of the possible 378 top 3 awards (60.85%).

You also realize that nobody in that time frame fished every single event and Club members have come and gone over the years. The Club size has been between 26 and 42 over that time frame. Only 10 anglers were members for all 18 of those years, 3 of the list of 13 were members the entire time. The same angler leads all 4 categories with 20 wins, 14 2nds, 13 3rds and 19 Big Bass Awards. 2nd place for 1st, 2nd and 3rd all sits at 11, 2nd place Big Bass is a 6 way tie with 5 each.

In looking at all of those numbers, the luck factor for a top 3 finish in a tournament to me...Skill 80%, Luck 20%. On the Big Bass Side: Skill 65%, Luck 35%.

big bass anglers are a total different story than the tourny anglers where skill is 100 percent...
