Hey guys,

I have had some rough couple of years and had to sell all of my fishing equipment. I am wanting to start buying more rods and reels to begin fishing again. I mainly fish with my dad. We do most of our fishing at night on Cedar Creek fishing the docks. He loves that so much.

What would you guys recommend as rods and reels to do this. When I did have rods and reels I was just using my bass fishing rigs, but most of those reels would wear out on the big hybrids.

What rods and reels do you use? I am not looking for expensive, just something that can throwswim baits and such. I would prrefer baitcast instead of spinning also.

Thanks

You Betcha

There is soooo much to personal preference to picking rods and reels. I went and bought the Bass Pro Extreme series rods and they are really nice. 1-piece in eiter Medium or Medium Heavy. I thing Medium works fine and plays the fish well. Very versatile for either white bass or hybrids. Best way to pick a reel is to play with a few and make sure they will do what you want and holds the line weight that you want. A lot of the B.P. Extreme rods are on clearence now at 60~70.00 makes them very reasonable!!

Good luck!

Abu 5500 will catch hybrids day after day , night after night,
year after year. I have some I've used for going on
20 years , you will not wear it out. All the striper
guides I have fished with use abu's.

Diawa makes a reel that runs about $59 with a twitchbar that works well for bottom bouncing, or twitching. I forget the name but it's grey/red. I've got a couple and like them so far. I've got them on a $49 castaway rod. Whole setup would be around $110 new. Not the best setup but will get you started and get the job done. thumb
BTW Hamster, that's a sweet set-up, wish I could afford it. Christmas hit hard. hammer I'm a fan of Diawa. thumb

To 2nd Mo I have 2 5500 series Abu's. I took them to Kodiak Alaska 2 years ago and caught many salmon, up to about 15lbs, with no problems. I now have them on some dedicated striper/hybrid rods. They're not as smooth as some of my other reels but they can take great amounts of abuse. I plan to buy more. Southwestern Parts off Mockingbird always has some used ones. They go through them and they're sound. They'll go 45-55 bucks. If you buy new ones just look on the side. The ones made in Sweden will be stamped with the logo. Newer ones are not made there. I prefer the time tested Swedish models. Nothing to base it on other than my personal preference.

Southwestern's web site is: http://www.southwesternparts.com/

If you let them know, they will put you on their list for used equipment when they have a sale. If you are ever in Dallas, visit them on west Mockingbird Lane.
