hey guys, let me start by saying hello to everyone. Now that deer season is done for me, its time to get into the fishing spirit. For the past 6 years ive been using my dads setup, never saw what he had on there. So I want my own this tim earound. I went and bought a 7 foot Medium heavy action Daiwa Beef Stick from Academy. What type of reel should i combo it with? I want to use the rod on the coast when fishing for reds or black drums, Ive heard Garcias have a good rep as well as Shimano, any inputs?

welcome To the forum.

Yes, both of those reel manufacturers are very good choices. I've owned Shimano Curado 200D and 200E as well as Abu Garcia Revo S, SX and a couple of the round baitcasters. I guess it all depends on your personal preferences on what you want and how deep your pockets are, but do yourself a favor and shop around for deals.
Out of that bunch, my favorite was the Revo S, and I found a few brand new ones for sale for $60 each.

If it's a spinning set up, Shimano makes some very good reels for under a $100-you can't go wrong there

I have the 2009 Abu Garcia REVO Premier right hand reel for sale if you are interested. I have several and they are new in the box. This reel is normally $259 and I am selling them for $159 plus $9.95 shipping if any one is interested.

Looks like you are fishing saltwater. I thought I remember reading something about Shimano being a better fit with the saltwater. Could be wrong.

yes mainly for saltwater, but occasionally freshwater too. Ive been to Academy about 6 times this week looking at different models. I like the Garcias. What am i too look for in a reel? Drag system? Bearings? i dont know what the bearing are for. can someone explain to me. Im trying to keep my price around $60-$80 roughly.

since you mentioned shimano...I love my cardiffs. Try the 300's. Should have the line capacity and drag strength you need for bass catfish or reds.

If you are fishing saltwater, be sure and by one that is rated for the salt. The saltwater reels do great in freshwater, but the freshwaters dont seem to do as well in the salt!

I received my revo s and put it my 7 ft rod and it looks to small to handle reds and cats. I want to put 20lb test line on it but I don't think it'll hold enuff. Any suggestions. I may just sell the revo s and get a bigger reel.
