my buddy has a puddle of oil that has leaked out of the inside of the prop.does this sound like a seal and is it hard to replace the seal?

If it is a Mercury then it could be gear lube. It needs to be checked out. It could be Premium Plus oil.

I had that problem and took the prop off and there was some fishing line raped around it Took it off and stoped the leak Maybe it not to late and your seal is ok. H.L.

Not unusual to see unburnt engine oil drip down the exhaust through the prop hub, dark blueish black might appear kind of greenish. Most gear oils are amber but after a year of running in the gearbox can end up looking dark green.
I'd check the gear oil for water.
