Does anyone tie on a second lure or jig a foot or two above their slab when slabbing?
I have been thinking about doing this and would like some input.
Thanks

Just tie on a roadrunner or just a plain old crappie jig. If they are thick you can get double salot.
Yes I did admit defeat. Good job back to back champion

We always double up, Little crappie jig works great when your in the school, 2 pull better than one, wait till you double with a hybrid!

Use a dropper knot about 18 inches up. I like a hand tied bucktail on a treble hook...with the hair a little thicker than on some....Other stuff works also.

I tie my own flies and use them. X 2 works. If I'm using a white slab, then chartruse fly, Char. Slab, white fly!
Good Luck

I tie direct. A leader will probably get tangled but must say I haven't tried one. I use 1/8oz. crappie jigs and try to mix up the colors like SuperDuck does. I also like the chartrues/red.
Be aware/ready to retie more often. They seem to knick the line quite a bit around the upper lure. Just run your fingers down the line each time you catch a fish.

Find a dropper knot on the web somewhere if you dont know how to tie one. A drop shot rig was not intended to have a lure on the tag end of the Palomar know and will break. If in small sandies it may be fine for a while but it wont stand up to a hybrid. I slide the bucktail up the line and then tie the slab on. Then pick a spot on the line and tie the dropper knot with the upper lure in it. If the upper lure where to get broken off the dropper knot will still hold and the lower lure may still be there. It is very strong knot and easy to tie for things like this. You might ask TNT Bryon just how many fish you can catch this way......he was witness to quite a day. if you are gonna fish doubles al the time you really need to use a bit heavier line than a lot of people use.

I tie a dropper loop and tie on a chartreuse and white clouser fly 1/0 hook. I probably get more fish on the fly during the summer than on the slab. Especially hybrids. That's why I use a size 1/0 hook.

Rockyfox, Does the lake you plan to fish have large hybrids or stripers? I have found that on parts of the lake where sandies are the primary fish, just about anything on a dropper loop 18 inches above your "heavy" lure is golden. I even designed a fly for that purpose. Man, what a blast!! If, however, you are in an area that boasts, bruiser hybs/stripers, I don't even try for doubles. I have been broken off too many times to play it any other way. Of course that info and $2.00 will get ya a cup of coffee.

Livingston does have some very large stripers but you hardly ever catch one and there are almost no hybrids. But, the whites are the largest I've ever seen and there are an amazing number of them.
