Lake Grapevine, Saturday, May 21st

This was a good/tough day on Lake Grapevine. The fishing was tough early and the heat was even tougher later in the morning. I was asked by Taylor Clarke (thank you Dennis Bolton) to help with a corporate trip for Pilgrims Pride.

Taylor is a great guy and guide, He runs his guide service, �Taylor Made Adventures� with professionalism and class.

The clients were running late unfortunately and by the time we got everyone aboard and got started the early morning schooling action was almost over. We did manage to get into a little schooling fish at Rock Ledge Park, catching one nice keeper White Bass. These fish were very scattered and hard to get. We tried vertically jigging the hump there with no more takers. From there I tried the hump just east of Murrell Park, then Murrell Park. Both places we managed to get one or two keepers and little else. From there I made the run to the Rock Crusher. The graph was pretty much blank here too. By now it was too hot to stay still unless you are catching fish so I moved us to the drop off at Meadowmere Park. At least here we marked lots of bait and fish, we even snagged two threadfins at one point!

From there I took us to Sand Bass Point and had pretty much the same results, catching one nice keeper Sand Bass. Well, at this point I just figured the Luck O� the Irish today was all bad. One more spot to try before I started all over again.

I headed to the drop off on the east end of the island and finally found a massive school of White/Sand Bass! We had 10 keepers when we pulled up around 10:30 and by the time we quit at noon we had caught another 40 for the box, catching and releasing another 20 to 30 undersized fish as well. The moment I got on the fish I called the other guides on our handheld radios and all of us proceeded to have a great time!

The water temperature is in the mid to upper 70�s and pretty murky. The fish were on the bottom as well as suspended in 28 to 32 feet deep. All of these fish were caught on RSR chartreuse minnow and shad slabs. Thank you Gary, Brenda and Dan. You were a fun trio to fish with!

There's two areas directly next to the island that I fish - either east or northeast. It sounds like you found them in that deeper stretch. It took me the better part of an hour and a half to find our fish late Friday. But once located it was nonstop. No one fishing around us either.
How many people did your group take out?
