This was today's interesting exercise: collect as many different types of spoon flies as I could find laying around here. I get 16, and each is different enough in one way or another that I consider each a separate species. The latest spoon I just posted to this thread is at top center. Some of the others are also made by me, others by friends, and a couple are commercial examples. I get a endless kick out of seeing what myriad varieties the erstwhile simple spoon can take. A few highlights: The little no. 12 spoonie at bottom left is a surprisingly effective panfish fly at times, made with tin foil, used on 3 wt. The silver one to its right is an epoxyless beer can spoon fly, made by a friend. The silver one to the right of that is epoxy molded in Play-Doh by a friend who says "finally got some use out of having kids". The long skinny green and gold spoons above them are fake fingernail spoons by another friend, one with an articulating tail.

That single strand of mono for a weedguard intrigues me. Do you have to hold it in position until the epoxy cures?

In this particular case, I cheated big time: I just aimed it like I wanted and zapped it with the light. Hah, Clear Cure Goo is really johnny-on-the-spot for positioning weed guards. But there are other, more traditional ways to accomplish same: one is to strategically pile on thread, then use Zap-A-Gap and kicker to give it a final fixing. The other is to use 5-minute epoxy and babysit it.

Never thought of using Play-do to make a mold. Might have to try my hand at some spoon flies doing that.
TxRR, you asked in another thread for more pickerel fly ideas. The weedless spoon just above the green fingernail spoon on the left is almost identical to my go-to spoon I used with my spinning gear when pickerel fishing. If you have time before heading out, whipping one of them up on a size 6 or 4 200R nymph hook would probably be a good idea.

Thus far, I have been successful at avoiding using epoxy for anything, but it's tempting.

I use the stuff almost like spot welding.. it cures in 3-5 seconds so its no big deal at all.. Did you tie that last small spoon on the bottom left? I will be tying some up too- Ill post them up after I get em done.

Txredaider, I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. I eat, breathe, and sleep epoxy. I use at least ten different types on a routine basis, even buy it by the gallon to make the boats and paddles I use for fishing. Fly Ty, yep. And I said it was foil but it ain't. Some are, but this particular one used a scrap of iridescent mylar from making larger saltwater spoons. It's tied on a dry fly hook, but probably a nymph hook woulda been better? But then, I'm starting to look at spoons a little differently. Instead of giving the body a curvature that runs at right angles to the fly centerline, I'm thinking it might be better to concentrate on achieving a Johnson Sprite/Dupre Spoon shape to get a wobbler and avoid the twirls.

Txredaider, Im on the opposite end of the spectrum. I eat, breathe, and sleep epoxy. I'm not your doctor, but I'm going to recommend that you cut back on eating and breathing the epoxy. I'll do some research on sleeping it and get back to you. Be forewarned that cutting back like this suddenly could reduce your creative fly designs and that would be bad for everyone.
