Mrs. Oldgringo and in are heading for the mountains next month with our 5th wheel. woot

Getting up the mountain is one thing; however, getting down the other side is a horse of another color. frown

How does one know when to replace the brake controller short of it flat out not working who_knows . Mine is about 10 years old. It used to grab the trailer up short when manually squeezed, now it just sorta' bogs it down without stopping the trailer even when idling on level ground.

Thanks for your input.

oldgringo, this is bill with hillcountry rv center. sounds to me like you should replace the controller, but i would DEFINATLY have the brakes checked on the 5th wheel. as you know going down a hill with no brake and that much weight....ouch!

First, I would check the brakes, How long since you have checked the brake linings for wear and freedom of movement? If brakes are in good shape, clean and recheck all electrical connections, Is the controller and brake solenoids getting full amperage? Other than adjustment , I never heard of a controller "partially failing".

Thanks guys,

I had the wheels pulled today, brake linkage and shoes checked and they were pronounced good. I witnessed the inspection/s and subsequent bearing inspection and packing. This was done by a local mechanic who is in the business of selling brake jobs and also has a RV.

A few months ago, the controller blew its fuse for some reason at Inks Lake who_knows . A new fuse and we continued on our way. It just doesn't seem to be braking as it should with the gain knobs turned up full blast. There is no significant difference in braking with changes in the gain knobs?

I'm open to more ideas and suggestions. smile

I believe you should take it to a RV dealer who can better check it out. Our TT had electronic brakes and worked like you described at first. When pulling that kind of weight, and you know something is amiss, get professional help.

You're right, Jerrybign. Going up the mountain is the easy part. Coming down the other side can get bothersome. eek

I talked with the Tekonsha factory and explained the situation. When I told the Tech Services lady that my controller was 12 years old, she chortled and said that it was tired and needed a rest. banana

Thanks to all for your input.
