I made some spoon flies too, but they suck so I'm kinda not going to, um, show them, you know. Ahem. Moral of the story is that epoxy isn't in danger of going extinct any time soon. The UV cure acrylic is an additional material to use, not a replacement for anything. While I'm sure I'll eventually learn to make excellent spoonies with it, I'm just as certain it'll never do well sealing up popper bodies and that sorta thing.
Pogo- Just tried to order some last night and they where out of stock until later this week. But I did notice this video tutorial: http://www.clearcuregoo.com/page5/page16/page16.htmlFor a Wire Spoon Fly and http://www.clearcuregoo.com/page5/page12/page12.htmlFor a Silly Putty Spoon Fly Very cool ideas and looks very easy. Hope it helps with your spoons- I will be tying up a ton of those after they get more in.

Thanks for that. Actually, the spoon fly fascinates me, and I have made well over a dozen various kinds and types over the years. The ones I tried recently with the CCG were the Waldner pattern, and the problem was basically poor handling of the goop 'cuz I ain't used to syringes. They scare me, actually, 'specially great big horse needles like that, makes my hands shake.
There are only two types of spoonies I actually fish with, and both use mylar sub-bodies for ease of manufacture; all the others I make for personal amusement and occasional experimenting. I strive for spoons that wobble and not spin, but even then I almost never strip spoons as with normal flies. The only time I fish 'em is when sight casting, and then I present the spoon, give just one or two short strips, then either pick up and recast, or hunt for fresh targets.
It probably ought to be noted that I like fishing with poppers so much it really limits the time I spend with any other type of fly.....

That clearcuregoo is pretty amazing stuff, but costs enough to be for someone SERIOUS about tying spoons. Still, very cool stuff.

Cost is relative. My kit cost less than half of a typical Comcast monthly bill ..... and I've never paid a penny for television in my life and never will.

Yes it is. I have no idea what Comcast cost, but I think you are looking at 35-50 to start with the clearcuregoo setup.

I'm from the old school of the "Great Depression", and live and die by "Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do, or Do Without" phylosphy. 5 minute Devcon epoxy thank you, Easier to apply, smoother application, mold it if you please - self forming on a drying wheel. Don't worry about turning yellow - just store out of sun - I have 20 year old epoxy flies that are perfectly clear. Practive - prctice - practice. You will be surprised what you can do with a $5.00 dollar tube of Goop from Home Depot and toluene thinner, Spoon flies, Spinster heads, thread cement.... Worried about fumes? Smell a bottle of SoftTex or Dave's Flexement sometime. More ways to skin a cat than one ....

Spoon Fly Tip: Dig out an old Johnson Silver Minnow spoon from your grandpa's tackle box - take a good look at it and mold your spoon flies accordingly and they will wobble - not spin. Broader for slow wobble slim for fast. Bend hooks accordingly some kahle hooks will work w/o bending. IMO the tutorial spoon flies I have checked out will spin like a top. Spoon flies are simple and easy - use mylar braid - AC aluminum tape - foil materials available at most hobby/craft stores. Cut foil to desired shape and place on top of hook then bottom sticky side to sticky side. Use thumb and forefinger to press into spoon profile. Add stick on eyes epoxy or Goop - paint if desired. Works for me.

Oh come on guys! My house is paid for, the truck is paid for, in fact everything I have is paid for, and there's no balance on the credit cards or anything, mostly because I don't have any credit cards. I've gotta throw some money around recklessly on something to keep from looking like some kind of un-Americane commie weirdo!! That's kind of a weak looking rant, but it'll have to do for today. In the meantime, I'm glad all this came up because it occasioned Mr. Glazener to let loose with a volley of really good stuff. I love it when veteran hands share their "secrets".

VERY NICE HLS...I love them, but have not used them, or tried to make them yet.

I have used those spinner blades to shape coke bottle plastic (after you heat the blade and form the plastic to that shape, it stays) and have tied a few good looking spoons that way. Something to play with. I never did however make the connection to just try and use the blades themselves... great idea, and thanks for sharing. I'll see if I can find a stainless hook to fit the eye of the blade... I've got some long shank 6s that might work. You might just inspire me to create a spoon fly I'll actually like

I'm starting to like the looks of this guy. It's of wire frame suspended epoxy type construction on a size 6 6X long hook bent to a shallow arch resembling a nymph hook. I have used the famous Dupre Spoon for inspiration. I'm pretty happy with the concave underbelly, really looks more like a classic Johnson Sprite than anything else I've managed to cobble together so far (nigh impossible to see in photo, darnit). I used my new toy, the Clear Cure Goo stuff, but it'd be easy enough using 5-minute epoxy. It's not difficult to make either, just requires a little working out and, of course, practice. Should be a simple matter to add coloration and/or glitter, also. Been meaning to get some SS wire to try as weed guards, too; maybe tomorrow.
