I have a 40 HP Evinrude outboard,I took it out on Sunday,It started up then died,if you pump the ball about every five seconds it runs fine,at idle and at full throttle.

I hooked it up to a pair of the water ear muffs today and ran it,I can pump the ball and see fuel going into the fuel filter, but it dies once all the fuel is gone out of the filter, its not getting fuel into the filter by itself.

The boat was oil injected, but the guy who I bought it from overrode the oil injection so you have to mix the gas yourself, don't know if this has anything to do with it,just thought I would mention it. What do ya'll think?

IF you are having to prime the pump to keep the engine runnnig, 9 out of 10 times it is the fuel pump that is bad. That 40 should have the mounting bolt holes to install a standard fuel pump. Then all you have to do is a little plumbing and your ready to go.

Thanks Mike, that would be nice if I could install a standard fuel pump, I didn't know if you had to go back with the Oil Injected. The Standard pump brand new is 96 bucks, the oil injected one is 396 bucks.

I have a Johnson 115 that was having what sounds like the same problem. But first, my VRO Pump is disconnected as well and I mix my oil and gas which is my preference and probably why the guy before you did it too. I have heard issues with the oil sensor not working if you ran low on oil with the VRO pump so many people disconnect them and mix their own so they dont have to worry about it.

To fix my shutting down issue I replaced the hose and fuel bulb from tank to motor which was less than $20 to change out and it fixed the whole thing. The issue with mine turned out to be all the hose clamps had been stripped or worn out so it was keeping a real good pressure seal to allow the fuel to keep going through the line and the old bulb was very stiff just from age i believe.

Hope this helps.

You can also buy parts to rebuild the fuel pump portion of the v.r.o. pump.

when in doubt TRIM IT OUT!

MY oil system just failed on my boat. Melted the rings on the pistons. I almost really did some damage. I also had the fuel line replaced, fuel filter, and had a fuel/water seprator installed. I will be mixing my own gas from now on.

On fuel pump change, and especialy asking Mike.....This is an out of the normal question...On old Volkswagons, there was a method to replace the mechanical pump with a little LOW PRESSURE electric pump that did not overpower the float needle. I think they were available from airco or something. I have always wondered if this might replace the pulse pumps on regular outboards and eliminate the fuel bu'b altogether....Any body ever seen this or is there a big flaw I haven't thought of.

Ow....You can and some have replaced the mechanical fuel pump with an electric unit. I do not want one on my engine. mainly for the fact that a mechanical fuel pump puts out about 1.6 oz of fuel pressure and the smallest electric unit puts out about 6 lbs. of fuel pressure. Also if the mechanical unit fails it will shut down the motor, if the motor fails, the mechaanical will of course shut down. How do you shut down an electrical one if the motor fails. Turn around and watch fuel spewing out of the cowling and in the water, Hope it don't get into your battery compartment and flood you bilge. Just for my safety, no I do not want one, and no I will not install one on your engine. I have installed one on the fuel tank of a trailered offshore boat, It is used ONLY to prime the engines before starting and is turned off after the motors are started. Then the engines mechanical fuel pump takes over.

Ok, makes sense. The main fuel delivery troubles I have always had have almost always had something to do with the primer bulb or the connections. I think some of the primer bulbs are not much good when new, even.

here's what I did, but it only works on large v4's and v6's, and always mount on the engine not in the bilge area.
and for the record my engine is supposed to hsve between 3 1/2-6psi (less than 3 is not recommended) and this pump only puts out about 5 1/2 psi max.

and the 2 red wires just below and in front of the pump are to a cut off switch.
