How far away from the bucket do you stand when you practice? And when your actually fishing do you try to land it right on the nest or just beyond it then pull it towards the nest?

i stand on an elevated surface, representing standing on the deck of a boat, and vary distances.. make sure you practice keeping your bait low throughout the pitch to minimize splasihing.

pitch it past the bed.. unless the fish is too mad to care hooked
