Never hurts to lower the motor just to make sure any excess water will drain out. (I have heard both arguements, but I would rathere error on the side of caution)

Lower the motor and train any excess water. If you are really concerned throw a tarp over the motor, buy a shop light that uses a standard light bulb 60 to 100 watt. Hang the light under the tarp close to the lower unit but not touching the unit, boat or tarp. The bulb is hot enough to scourch paint, gell coat or tarp. Keep it lit throughout the cold spell, the light will generate enough heat to keep lower unit and head from freezing.

As long as you drained the water out of the LU (put the motor down) you'll be fine. Some lose their water pressure line when it gets below freezing also. I've never had a problem with that though.

How do you winterize a boat. I am a new boat owner and I use it every week. My motor is down, and its new ( April ) I hope I'am good for the cold.

Inboard motors are water cooled. Need to drain the water/winterize or could crack your block or some thing like that. Do not have inboard motor but know that they need to be winterized to prevent costly repairs.

Someone in another post mentioned wrapping Christmas lights around the engine. Anyone else hear this? Do they really create enough warmth?

i usually just run it about a minute everyday (without water hooked up) & leave it trimmed down. Is this good enough for an inboard?

I keep my boat inside and still put a heat lamp on the lower unit when it gets below 25...inboards need to be completely drained, block, exhaust manifolds and hoses if they are open systems....closed systems need to have the coolant checked just like a car....
