I'd like your opinions on the best river locations for trout fishing around texas, particularly not too far from Houston, Tx. Thanks guys!

The very best in Texas would be the Ghadalupe River. Go to the GRTU website, they'll have plenty of details.

guad, possum kingdom tailrace (very far from houston; and small but fun), and anywhere on the laguna madre for saltwater. there is also trout (use to be natural) waaaaaaaaaaay out in west texas in the davis mountains but it is completely private with no pardons.

Josh, A good place to start would be: http://www.grtu.org/forums/From Houston, you are looking at about a 3 hour drive to get to the Guadalupe. There are a number of places with rooms along the river and you can camp to save some $. The area between 4th crossing (on River Road) and 2nd crossing is the more fished area and there are a number of places to access the river, with all charging a $5-8 fee for access. The guys at Guadalupe Fly (see post above) do have a nice map of the river for sale that shows the access points and gives very good info on the basics of access, what to fish and when. You can also refer to the the TPWD stocking map for more basic information about access and get an idea of the trout area along the Guadalupe. (click here for the TPWD Map) Click here for the shameless plug/fishing report

Guadalupe is mentioned most often because it is the only place you will find large trout that live in the water year round. thats because the water they are in is coming from the bottom of a rather deep lake, and the water temperatures stay cold in the tailrace year round. the state stocks the Guad with both small trout and trophy trout, but they also stock the small trout in fishing ponds throughout the state. a list of locations and stocking dates can be found here.. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/management/stocking/trout_stocking.phtmlIf you want true trout fishing, then the Guad is where you want to go. (keep in mind that there are special regulations for the stretch of Guad that holds the trophy trout). but if you just want to catch some pan trout, then there are locations in and around Houston where you can find them in the winter months. for instance. they just stocked Eisenhower Park Pond in Houston with 3,000 trout on Monday.

That map reminded me of a TPWM article about the 2002 spill of Canyon Lake.
