Dead drift them under an indicator, if you need to get them down in the water column attach split shot 6-8" above fly. Adjust split shot weight till you are at the correct depth. Normally you want that fly bouncing along the bottom. If you are getting hung up on the bottom every drift take some weight off. If your not hitting thebottom add weight. You want just enough weght for fly to bounce off the bottom without hanging up.

An additional option would be to fish it as a dropper off of a popper I&R bjg dry fly.

An unweighted Pheasant Tail (#14-20) is something I always have in my fly box. They are deadly when you encounter a tough fish in slow / shallow water.
Lengthen your leader and drop the fly upstream of the fish - far enough away so you don't spook it. Do not bother with an indicator. In heavily fished waters, an indicator can put a fish down instantly. Instead, watch the fish. Your fly will be in the surface film, or just below. If you get a good drift down to the fish, you will observe him moving to intercept the fly and then see a white flash as he opens and closes his mouth. Lift the rod to set the hook!
They work well cruising carp too! Don't leave home without them.
