I recently moved back to College Station and I'm interested in doing some fishing on lake somerville. I grew up a little ways north of Waco and fished whitney, aquilla, tradinghouse, navarro mills, and fairfield primarily. I was after Bass well over 90% of the time too, but I did do some crappie and a little catfish fishing from time to time.

So, basically, I'm looking for places to try mostly for crappie, white bass, and catfish on somerville. My girlfriend or people that have never really bass fished much will be with me most of the time so I'm trying to keep things simple.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Somerville is a great Crappie and Catfish lake. Right now fish the standing timber on the back side of Deer Island for Cats. Cormorants roost in the trees and the Cats are under the trees. For Cats, don't need a weight, just a 4/0 catfish hook and chicken gizzard. Cast to the tree trunk and under the limbs, Cats hit like a top water Bass. Be ready to set the hook fast with each cast, you will fill your livewell. Don't need to let your bait sit there for long, just cast and let it fall a bit, you will soon find out if they are hitting it soon as it hits the water or if they are waiting for it to fall a few feet. For Crappie, the standing timber also and off the pier at Birch Creek in the State Park is good in the winter. Good jig color is black and chart and sparkle turquoise head with chart tail . Back in the creeks, Nails and Yegua are good if the lake water level is not too low and you can get back there. Good luck!

Fishing has been kind of slow at Somerville lately with the lake being 3 feet low and the creeks not running. If we get enough rain soon the lake could come back up and the fishing should improve.

Was there Sunday eve. Lake is more than 3 ft low now. My guess would be 4 or 5. Brush piles which were usually in 18ft of water are now in 13-15ft of water. Did manage to catch a few whites by drifting with minnows along the dam. Stayed in 17ft of water, fished 7 to 10 feet down. Was actually spider rigging for crappie, but caught none of them. All fish were around 1 1/2lb.

I always fish from the bank, but I never have caught anything from the lake itself, only from behind the spillway. Therefore I cannot give much advice, but I'd love to learn the lake a little better and catch a few fish, so I'll keep my eyes on this thread.

With the lake being low the whitebass will spawn off the points around Birch Creek State Park. Ghost minnows or shad on the bottom will do the trick starting anywhere from now until April. Can be real hit or miss depending on which direction the wind has been blowing and for how long.. Generally if a south wind has been warming the water for a few days then the fish will get active off the points in shallow enough water that bank fishing is possible otherwise the colder days will keep then out in deeper water and not so active.. Crappie fishing from the pier is good if you time it right...

Sounds good man. Are you a member of Aggie Anglers?

I was a member for a year, but didn't have enough time with school and such. Now I have a place to keep my dads old boat (though it isn't much) and time and money to at least give it a go. Just gotta get the outboard checked out which will hopefully be done by mid February!
