I am new to Richland Chambers Reservoir and have just purchased a variety of jigs from Jigum Jigs. My question is what are the best methods to use the jigs for Crappie. I am new to crappie fishing but I have done some jigging back home for striper and in the ocean for Yellowtail. Is the method the same - drop jig, raise rod tip, drop again, repeat? Hope to have my new boat in a week or so and I want to be ready.

My jigging technique falls under the "less is more" category. For vertical jigging, just drop the jig over the side of the boat. Let the jig fall to the depth of the fish which you have found using your electronics and then hold the jig as still as possible. Giving the rod tip a twitch every now and then. I have some other tips listed on my website here that may be of use too. The best technique to use is the one the fish tell you that they want on that particular day.

Mr Rules,
I am no pro at this game by far but I can tell you that there are many presentations for jigging crappie. At times, such as the spawn, the fish prefer more movement. I think the movement during this season serves to irritate the crappie into biting since they are not that hungry while they're on their beds. There are also times when you want to hold the jig as still as possible. Even when you're attempting to do this, the jig is still moving secondary to other factors such as the wind, current, even your heartbeat. Then there are the different techniques such as vertical jigging, slip cork/jig, trolling just to name a few. I say all this to say that there are many types of presentations for jigging. Sometimes you just have to experiment to see what the fish wants. I'll let the pros (Guy, Ernest, Chuck, Duck Jerky, etc...) elaborate.

Hey Stu, Thanks for the purchase of JIGUM JIGS.... Just as you have done in the past with your jigging technique will probably work.... I think the key to crappie catching is to know and use those electronics, dept and location pay a big part in the catch.... I've been on the lakes with several good crappie fishermen in this area and to watch them use the electronics is awesome.... If you have some trouble I might suggest to hire one of them and they can all give you some very useful information, (ERNEST PATY, GUY SKINNER, BRIAN DUCK_JERKY CARTER, CHUCK ROLLINS, JEFF SCHILLER ) these are just a few of the north Texas Guides that I've fished with and they will all put you on fish.... Just remember to learn those electronics.... So much for the rambling, good luck and THANKS AGAIN for the purchase of JIGUM JIGS.... Matthew

MrRules, all of the methods described abouve will work. But to me it depends on whether I am fishing brush tops bridge pilings or fishing the brush when the crappie are spawning. The puddle jumper has always worked for me in all of the situations mentioned. The crappie will let you know what is working best. Just pay close attention when you do get bit, and try to duplicate it.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions. I have planned to do a guide trip or two to get me started and will follow through on this when the boat arrives. Thanks again, I really appreciate the help provided on this board.

I remember reading one of Guy's replies to jet skis and wake board boats. "Sometimes I like them, the do all the jiggin' for me. All I have to do is hold the rod and wait".
Take a good look at what you're about to eat. It's not important to know what it is, but it is important to know what it was!

I keep my jigs at home on most days and through out a minnow on a 2/0 snell hook with a little weight.
