Which do you prefer. I am leaning towards chain so it won't get tangled as much as rope. Your thoughts?
Thanks

Rope can be cut quickly in an emergency. Never had a tangle. I use six foot of chain between rope and anchor. I would use the chain on the alligars . David WWW.DAVESGUIDESERVICE.NET

Chain between your rope and anchor also helps the anchor to dig in. The rope is so you can cut it free in an emergency like David said.

That's good! Maybe I should spool chain on my reel for the alligars. What size/type chain should I use between the rope and the anchor?

Looking in the BPS catalog, page 507, 1/4" x 4-foot length has a break strength of 5200 lbs. and 5/16" x 6-foot a breaking strength of 6800 lbs. Depends on the size of your boat and anchor type I would reckon. There is also a standard for the amount of rope to use based on water depth you anchor in. Here\'s a one page read about anchoring.

Parkenstein, Great info from Redfin! I bought a package from Academy with 100' of 3/8" anchor rope with chain for about 30 bucks. Added 100' of rope to it and use a 20 pound "navy type" anchor (only because it fits in my anchor locker). This rig hasn't failed in 20-30 winds. 22' skeeter center console fishing the lake you set the hybrid record on. That was you wasn't it? David WWW.DAVESGUIDESERVICE.NET

My fishing partner and I had this same question last summer - we were having troubles getting the anchor to "stick". The salt water guys said to use a chain the same length as the boat and 3-4 times the rope length as the water is deep that you are trying to anchor in. I still use the six foot long 1/4" chain that I had and let out more line. I use about 200 feet of rope since we fish some deep water. So far so good... The best thing I learned last summer was how to get the anchor up. Just fire the boat up and circle back around the anchor pulling it in the opposite direction that you were anchored. When you see it bouncing on top of the water...turn the big engine off and start pulling in the anchor rope. Much easier than pulling the anchor off the bottom

I bought six or eight foot of that white vinyl coated chain from Lowe's Home Improvement Center....I think it's 5/16".....I would prefer 3/8" to get the weight. That vinyl is still in good shape four years later. I figured it would wear off easy, and it hasn't at all.
Just wish I would have done what Fuzzy says....Go with a piece of chain as long as my boat, instead of the 6'-8' piece.....And, may go back and get an extra ten feet and splice on. Texoma has a good many areas with a very hard clay bottom and you need a good bit of weight to get that anchor locked in.
I use a 1/2" braided nylon rope 150'.....It's easier on the hands and won't hardly ever become tangled on itself. Plus, I have an additional 100' of 3/8" rope backing it up on those really windy days.

Our best this year was 9lbs. 14oz., 30" fish with no belly. Mike Acosta beat your record but, didn't know it until after it was fileted. You are still the man! Good luck in your guide business. David WWW.DAVESGUIDESERVICE.NET
