any tips for fishing a jig this time of year?
any favorite colors? techniques? common depths?
I can't catch a fish with a jig and I am dedicating myself to learning it this year.

Man I'm in the same boat as you. If you have not checked it out yet. Go to you tube, do a serch on jig fishing for bass, or flipping and pitching. It will take you most of the day to go through all the content. Of course you will get a lot of good advise here too.

Rip Rap / Rocks seem to be one of the best for me. You want 45 degree slopes, fish in the winter want to be able to move up and down the water column. Rocks warm in the sunlight.
I use large bulky trailers, and keep a full skirt on the jig. I like the Lake Fork Tackle Pig Claws alot this time of year. I caught 2 nice chunks on Lavon last week in only 30 minutes of fishing, throwing a 3/8 ounce black and blue jig with a LFT pig claw on the rocks.
Slow, slow, slow. Toss the jig out let it settle to the bottom. Let is set for about 15 to 30 seconds. Shake it let is set again before you ever move it.
Jigs are great in the Winter and they catch solid fish.

I like to pitch it to laydown's and stumps and the ones that have grass around them are even better. Fish them under docks as well on the corners and ladders.

Jigs are great in the Winter and they catch solid fish. Right on the money Joe. You really cant move it slow enough. I like to fish visible cover if it has been sunny for a couple days (rocks/wood) These types of cover will hold heat and you will often find the bass right next to them. Just pitch the jig out and give it a good 30 seconds before starting your retrieve.

I like to fish them this time of year on riprap that has a good slope and deep water close by. Slowly crawl them over each rock. Sometimes this will produce fish on even the coldest and nastiest days.

What about line size? I typically use either 50# braid or 20# Mono...especially braid when tossing in the stumps.
