Matt, Matt, Matt, you'll catch on eventually, LOL, Am a transplant from So. Cal. myself (lived in Corona for 5 yrs) but moved here just over a year ago. Bought a (NEW) house bigger than my Corona house @ a 1/3 the cost!!! Tooka huge cut in pay to do it, but live WAY better here. And the lakes? Fork, Palestine, Tyler, Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, Lake-o-the Pines, Richland Chambers - all within pretty easy driving distance - not to mention- Amistad, Falcon, Choke Canyon - you'd go "nuts" at those lakes dude! People here are "Real" & friendly, where I live is peaceful & quiet - no helicopters flyin over the house- fewer a$$holes LOL, etc. etc. One thing I do miss is the REAL Mexican food though - sheesh - had to learn some Spanish just to order in So. Cal.!! Next time ya come, send me a PM - I'll show you around.

I was stationed at Camp Pendleton for a couple years and have to admit that Alberto's has the best burritos on planet earth. San Diego county lakes are tiny though...and way too many rules and regulations. Clearlake, up north is nice, but man there's alot of hippies and weed up there.

The California cult has turned this young man's brain to mush since he wants to stay in the land of fruits and nuts. Do we have anyone on the TFF that is able to do some reversal of that brainwashing??

Matt, there's plenty of authentic Mexican food in N TX. Send me a PM when you're here and you start craving....
We may never get to 20# here because we don't have CLOSED SEASONS on our lakes. And, we actually have a winter. Right now, you won't find a non-powerplant lake in N TX with surface temps above 50 degrees. No bass is growing (we're not talking eggs here) in N TX right now. They are just existing.

To be fair, judging all of Texas' mexican food based on a visit to Tyler, of all places, is selling us a little short. Kinda like if I went to some small town outside of Sacramento and came to the conclusion that California mexican food was weak.
Come to Houston and you'll have a different impression of Texas mexican food. Houston is to Texas mexican food what San Diego is to California mexican food.

I went to Tyler to visit my mom over Christmas. She tried real hard to show me all the cheap nice houses you have out there. It was almost tempting. There was one on 17 acres with a two acre pond and the house was huge for around 350,000. When we were flying in it looked like everybody has a big pond in thier back yards. I bet you guys have them stocked real good too. We drove around lake palistine and I have to say that was the biggest lake I have ever seen. Dang I wouldnt know where to start. I would probably start on all those richy looking boat houses. Now I understand why you all need those super fast bass bots. I have one too but I ususly only go up to 50-60 mph It only takes a 10-15 minutes to get to the other side of a good sized lake in So Cal. Plus it looked dangerous out there. Even in the middle of the lake there were stups sticking out. I did notice while flying in that everything was flat. No moutains, I assume your lakes are shallow. And finaly for any of you guys who havent visited the Tyler zoo you have to go see the bluegill they have in that aqarium. Now those were impresive. There were a couple that looked to be 3 lbs. You guys have it good over there. Nice affordable houses and tons of lakes to fish and your walmarts even sold guns. But I wont be moving anytime soon. I'll reconsider if you all start producing some 20 lbers Let me know when you head this way. You can hire me to make baits and feed your 20 lber.

One day when we lose our minds in Texas like the loons in Cali we will put all our bass in a little pond and feed em' trout and allow only jon boats with trolling motors on the lake... Then you can come back and catch your 20lber!

Matt
Lake Palestine is a Stump Fest past the 155 Bridge headed North. The Creeks are mine fields of stumps. Mostly shallow but has some areas of 50ft water near the main creek channel on the South end. Most fish are caught in less than 12ft of water with 4-8t being very productive. The Boathouses and docks are prime areas on most any Texas lakes. Those ponds have some good fish too but most wont hold many over 10#.
Far South Eastern lakes 180,00 Acre Toledo Bend and 114,000 Acre Sam Rayburn have water around 100ft in the main river channels.
Lake Ray Roberts and Texoma are two of the deepest North Central Texas Lakes with water around 100ft on the channels in the main lake and some good deep structure. 44,000 Acre Richland Chambers though not a deep lake has expansive areas of mid depth structure and timber... when the grass is growing well it's a great lake.
The Highland rocky canyon lakes chain in the Texas Hill country are closer to the size and depth you are used to but the fish run a lot smaller.
Deep South Texas lakes Falcon, Amistad and Choke Canyon have been good for double digits up to around 16# of late.

Oh I admit that as a sportsman and a conservative TX is way better then CA. I hate all the stupid laws and politics of CA. However I did grow up in San Diego and I am very comfortable here. I know when where and how to catch our big bass even though I have to jump through hoops to do it. This has spoiled me to where I dont fish much for regular sized bass. For regular /fun fishing I go to the ocean and bays. This is one huge reason I wont move. I can cacth a 100 differnt kind of fish in a month. Also I love to hunt. I know we dont have great deer hunting but I get at least 1 every year and and birds and ducks etc. We have a lot of public land and from what I have heard TX is almost all private. To sum it up, I have spent 25 years finding the best fishing and hunting spots in so cal and I have a ton of variaety and great weather. Now I know Tx is a much more sportsman friendly state. I am tempted to buy a little house with a few acres to vist and hunt. of course I have to save my money for a while too. Who knows maybe someday I will get sick of all the rules out here and move. I'll say this, it sure looks a hellova lot prettier there then it does in San diego. Next time I vist I am goint to fish! I want to catch one of those huge gar.
