My wife and I went to Gibbons Creek this morning for a few hours. We started in some shallow water and had nothing, so we tied up to the cable at the hot water discharge. We caught a few tilapia on spoons and I went to a live target shad crankbait to try to catch some bass. I caught a 4lb one on about the third cast then nothing until we went to leave and then I caught a 17.5" 6.5lb bass. the pics look horrible but once I get them off my iphone I will post them.

We fished from daylight to noon yesterday with only 1 4# fish to show for our efforts. Started in the discharge and fished all around that area for a couple of hours (helps being the first boat on the water). We only saw one other boat snag a tilapia the entire time. The water was very off colored to muddy and surprisingly chilly for a power plant lake (63 at the discharge, 54 at the ramp). I wished I would have listened to the little voice in my head that said to go to Fayette instead.

I'd say you're right, fishingboy, maybe even less than that... Maybe 3.5 lbs., but nowhere near 5 or 6.5. The picture may make it look smaller, but the numbers just don't add up.

A 17.5" largemouth would have to have a girth of over 22" to be around 6.5 lbs. A typical man's head is only 6" wide and 21" in circumference, and that fish isn't half as wide as your head in the photo.

That first fish is MAX 3 pounds. I caught one that hit Barely hit 18" at fairfield the other day that was fat as can be and it was 3.30.

The photos don't make it look small, the fish itself is small. I'd buy a scale for the next trip.

Good advice. Those are nice fish and I'd be happy to catch them too but they are not in the weight class you think they are.

Could be. I will have to buy a decent scale. Back in the 90s when the lake was pure catch and release I caught one that was a shade over 10lbs and 24". I weighed it at the weigh station at the boat ramp.

Just for perspective, your 24" fish was probably around 18" in girth to weigh 10 lbs. Your 17.5" fish would have had to have a girth over 4" bigger than your 10 pounder to weigh 6.5 lbs.

So, the numbers say that the likelihood of that is very slim to...none...

Not much of a "could be" about it. Your fish was about 3 lbs. less than you think, at best. That's one hell of a fish story, because according to you, even the picture is lying.

I fished 12-26 three guys in boat fished from 10-dark for only two fish one about 3LB and the other at 4lb. Fish were cold water was cold and I to wish I went to Fayette in stead but you never know. Its been two years since I had been on the lake and a lot has changed.
