My cousin, who fishes the BFL, was recently hoaning his skills at a local pound. He was fishing for large mouth, using a small topwater poper. However, what he got into was suprising. He told me that crappie after crappie was blowing up on the bait. He says he must have caught about 20 of them. I swear this guy gets into the weirdest stuff. I have been saltwater fishing with him and seen him catch hardhead on mirror lures and mullet on spoons. Lip hooks, not foul. Anyway, does the topwater crappie bite supprise anyone. I dont ever target crappie and only occasionaly catch them on bass baits like traps or cranks. I had no idea that they would ever hit top waters though. One I can understand maybee. But 20? Has anyone else ever encountered this before. It tickles me to death.

No suprise to me. My father-n-laws little lake (20 acres or so) houses catfish, crappie, lmb in plenty. I often will get crappie along the edges on a clear torpedo, it drives them absolutely crazy when it hits the water, not sure why as I fish for the bass primarily but enjoy a good crappie fight too. Starnge for me was the night I got a catfish on a torpedo? Now that was weird!

I could have caught them on topwaters this week. The crappie were in such shallow water and feeding that when we threw a dead minnow over board we would sometimes see a crappie come up and get it. It would be a quick flash but is was crappie. I had lots of kids on my boat this week so minnows were the bait of choice. Other wise it would have been a jig all the way.

I catch mullet on Kastmaster spoons all of the time, lip hooks, not foul. They fight good on ultralight tackle.
I have also caught crappie on tiny torpedoes.

Yea, I know fish hit lures that they are not designed for them but the fact that my cousin caught not one but 20 is what strikes me. It was a pattern not just a single fish.

I've caught em while bass fishing years ago on spoons, spinnerbaits, rogues, buzzbaits, and plastic worms, especially in the Spring during spawn. Even have caught a bluecat on a Johnson Silverminnow weedless spoon in about 6 ft of water. It's cool though.

I have caught a few while bass fishing on a black/white tiny torpedo. Sounds like torpedos are good bait!?

caught a few crappie on LBJ last week fishing a 7in black power worm - texas rigged.
the strangest fishing i ever got into was on Lake Austin about 10yrs ago. it was late spring & i was back in a cove fishing a clear tiny torpedo. i hooked but never landed dozens of spotted gar that day. think they were back there spawning and that prop really pissed them off. they were smacking it with their bodies, tails and jaws. fun stuff on a slow day for bass.

Believe it for sure! .. I've caught a number of them on top before. I fly fish for them often. What I do is tie on a small panfish popper, and then a few feet below that tie on a small white or chartreuse lightly weighted fly (conceptually similar to a jig/bobber setup). While most crappie do hit the dropper fly, I have had some days when I've caught a number of crappie that have come up to hit the small popper.
John 5:24 Very truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
1Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

Yea, gar love to hit little torpedos. It can be almost fun especially when the bass arnt biting. Gar will hit just about in lure with good action immediatly. You can sight cast to them and let their aggressive personality take over. Keeping them hooked is the problem and taking them off is even worse.
