I am a new, emerging bass fishermen and had some fun last year with my Son, fishing for crappie at Joe Pool. I am curious if some of you might give me a few pointers on the conditions that would indicate, crappies are spawning. I want my Son to have a blast so I am starting to gear him up for some good Sprinf fishing. Thanks for any advice you might share (ie: month/water temp)

Nothing is better then passing down a great hobby to your son or daughter.

It's all up to the females as usual wink

Under normal conditions from now until April the crappie move up the creeks to spawn. Peaks in spawning activity cycle with the moon from what I've read, and only the intensity changes due to other factors like temp, water levels and water quality. By natures design the spawn is spread out over several weeks to ensure survival.

Water temp, and sunlite! the water is still 49-50 degrees. It's a little early still. They are still following the big balls of shad in deep water right now. But, as I get older the time goes faster, and they wiil move into stages soon enough. There is prespwawn, where they'll move up to secondary drops, and hold there till that moment when they are about to burst.
If we don't get some rain soon, there is no telling what the reaction will be. But access from the bank should be extraordinary. Now is a good time to walk around at your favorite lake and look for cover that will be in shallow water if and when it does rain. That's where you'll find your fish. And if we don't get rain, I'd say they will be just out from that cover at the first drop. The spaw has never been that good for me because of the weather changes that are so rapid that if you aren't fishing every day, it's total hit and miss. Cold fronts will drive you crazy. Find creek mouths that meet a spawning area, they will hold fish. Trial and error my friend.
I've always said, the more fish I catch, the more fish I catch. What I mean by that is, catching is the best teacher.
Of course, then there's Ernest Paty. A better teacher, for times other than the spawn.

The spawn is roughly the same time as the lmb spawn.

When the water temps near 62 degrees and the full moon comes arount, the'll be spawning. Usually the full moon in April.

Before that, you will find them staging in 10' of water next to the spawing areas, that's also where you'll find the larger females during the spawn.
