I'm assuming this means overheating?

What are the possible causes?

Well it is overheat but it could be a few things most obvious would be a weak impeller. #2 trash in thermostat causing opposite head to run hot or a overheating compressor which could be from a stopped up tell tale with this being stopped up the compressor will overheat......OPTI

The impeller is roughly two years old... maybe I should start there.

I start it, let it warm up for about five minutes or so at idle and then the alarm goes off.

At 2yrs you should replace the impeller anyway. But you could have another problem like opti said

I had a similar problem and it was a powerhead gasket blown.
