Hey Baylorguy...that reminds me. An excellent and inexpensive wasp and yellow jacket killer:

In a pump up sprayer, pour in about a 3rd or so bottle of the cheapest dishwashing detergent you can buy. to this add about 1/2 a gallon of water.

That's it. You can experiment with the ratio a little until you get one that works quickly but is still cheap and pretty much enviromentally friendly. When you spray them they might not die instantly like when using the commercial wasp/hornet killers, but they WILL fall to the ground within seconds and die within a few minutes. This is especially good to know if you have lots of nest (Priced the commercial stuff lately?)

Give it a try papa. I learned it from a friend who lives down around Natalia. He has lots of brush and such and lots of outbuildings and trailers on his place. It is a durned yellow jacket preserve this time of year. They even make nest up in the mesquite tree limbs that you are prone to running under when brush hogging with the tractor. Man-I hate em. If there are lots of them, the trick is to wait until dark to kill them. Reason being they are ALL in the nest at that time, and they won't give chase then either (unless you have a bright light on). A fun thing to do with the little Ba***rds is to turn on a real bright - hot lamp close to their nest. It drives them nuts, and they'll play the devil trying to sting the hot bulb. smile As you can see...I don't want them around....I want them punished!

Try a few different mix ratios with the soap, keeping in mind that the stronger the mix, the quicker the kill. If you really want to nail them, put in a whole 16 oz. bottle of a real good detergent like dawn, into say a 2 gallon sprayer.

I have yet to see this stuff fail. It will kill each and every one you get with it, and quickly too.

Had a Pastor that once poured gas down a fire ant hill.

He thought the gas would "soak in" and he could light it and kill the little suckers.

He leans over, looks down into the mound, drops a match in, and the gasoline vapors immediately ignite.

The entire ant hill launches like a rocket, goes 15 feet up in the air.

The Pastor is knocked on his back by the explosion, gets his hair somewhat singed. To add insult to injury, fire ants "rain down on him" and he gets bitten.

I thought I'd die laughing as he was telling the story.

Now, he just sprinkles white powder on 'em! laugh

I live on 5 acres of prime fireant growing black dirt in Comal county and the best thing I've found is "Over & Out" as mentioned in an earlier post. This is the 2nd year I've used it in the yard and it's 99% effective even after the 10" of rain we got last week and lasts all year. Put it on in early spring before the ants are active. I now have 4 1/2 acres of ants around me but none in the yard. It's about $20 a bag at Wally World that will cover a large front & back yard.

You guys crack me up, "pee on yourself". Scratch or smell like pee. I don't know which is worse.

I was born and raised in south Texas (Jackson County) and that is cotton country, as well as rice country. The boll weevil was the worst enemy of the cotton farmer and pesticides were used extensively against them. Now, the fire ant has pretty much eradicated the boll weevil and farmers are producing more cotton per acre than ever before. I not live in Garland and fire ants are everywhere, mostly in my neighbors yard, but they make it into my yard after the AMDRO wears off. I usually put a full bag of the stuff in the hopper of my fertilizer spreader and broadcast the AMDRO at the same time I spread fertilizer. Works good. Marbravo

Yea, I hope we don't get into baby seal bashing either. No pun intended of course. laugh

Fire ants were imported to combat boll weivels, a cotton pest. Johnson Grass was imported because it was so prolific, for cattle, the chiggers came with it. When will the econuts ever learn. rolleyes
