Yesterday while fishing for bass at Fork I went back into a small cut towards the mouth of Caney (almost dead even with the tree line) and saw on 2 different stumps crappie on top of them with turtles harrassing them.

Were they spawning on the top of the stump and the turtles were trying to get to the eggs? I just had never seen this and when we spooked them off they came right back, both the crappie and the turtle?

Just curious as I had never seen this before.

Good luck and good fishing!

I've seen that same thing on Fork about 7 years ago. They are spawning on top of the stump. The ones I saw were in the fork of a tree in about 15 feet of water up a creek. Crappie will spawn in forks and stumps of trees and also vegetation if its stable enough like vines on the side of a creek bank. Bass will do the same thing.

Spawning and turtles eating eggs. Catfish and bream will be there too for the feast.

Thanks...I thought that might be it but I didn't know they would do that.

Yes, Willie it is pretty cool to see something like that. Another thing I saw this year I had never seen was some type of duck standing on a turtle's back grooming itself. That was neat to see.

Hope everyone has a good week and thanks again.

I'll tell you what's cool- I saw a pair of big bass spawn in the Bass Pro Shop Aquarium last year. Of course, survival in that tank was probably zilch.
