The best barge fishing has to be Big Creek Marina
on Lake Sommerville, 50 miles north west of Houston. you can fish inside and outside. You can fish 8 feet deep or 28 feet deep. The barge sits on a major drop off into one of the major creeks, which has a dramatic drop off from the shoreline. Teh barge is located on the main lake which makes it even better for attracting Crappie from the deep creek. This is a 11,400 acre lake.
I went last Saturday and caught 16 keepers. Got there at 6 AM (thats what time it opens), quit fishig at 10:30 AM to clean my fish to go watch football.

That sounds like your on to a good thing, I live in Fort Worth, I usually fish at Rocky Creek Barge on Lake Benbrook or Weatherford Barge at Lake Weatherford. Both can be very good places to catch fish, expecially for crappie.

Of the two, I would go with Weatherford, it is larger, has lights, and the new owners are great, they really help make the trip there worth while, even when the fish arent biting.

Always enjoy seeing cutie pie (Michelle), she makes everyone feel good about themselves and welcome to be there. And starting recently, the crappie have really picked up, first limits by fisherman are being taken out of there now.

I never caught a limit of keeper crappie before, just really getting started in this way of fishing, so with info I learned on here, and getting better through experience, it will happen soon since the big ones are moving in to the barge now.

Good post, look forward to seeing what info is past along to us all.

Do the Vietnamese people still come in in droves at Weatherford Barge? I went there 4 or 5 years ago and at about 3am the Vietnamese began to gather and by 5am there was 30 of them there. I have never felt more out of place. They would keep every fish they caught regardless of size and the ones that were too small they would wrap in walmart bags and stuff in their coveralls! Man was it strange. I will give them credit though, they caught more fish in 10 minutes than we caught the whole trip.

say there Aggie ... I fish the 121 slips at Lewisville and man can drag'em in. I did not do well at all last week but I do great most days. I think we all would love to have slips or barges like your. The depth here doesn't change much at all....16'-24'......hook'em horns.

eek I've heard about the Vietnamese people and that they keep everything that gets on their hook.
Why has no one contacted the warden and had him check it out? Not because they are Vietnamese but because they are going to ruin the fishing in the lake.

Well I spoke to the one of the family members about the comments on the large group of fisherman mentioned here at Lake Weatherford Barge. Fisherman doing all the wrong things, and she agreed that without the race thing being a factor, there have been many individuals taking advantage of the Barge in the past being open 24/7 and not always manned by store personel.

However, there have been changes made now that will insure everyone has a good time, and still stays within the Barge rules of two poles per fisherman, and no fish kept that are not legal.
On the one particuliar area of concern mentioned here, Michelle told me just today when I shared this concern posted here, that a friend of the family, who is a law enforcement officer, made several trips at night, and early in the morning last year to collect barge fees from those that would skip out before the store opened, and let everyone know fish may be kept only when legal. After that occured on several occassions, many fisherman that break the rules, both State and Barge, have not returned.

Due to this action, many positive changes have been made, so things are happening there in a positive way for all fisherman to go there and feel both welcome and safe. Give the new owners a chance, they deserve that. They are the best at custumer service I have experienced.

you don't have to wonder ooooo they were coming to j.p. for a while doing the same thing parks @ wild. took care of it. wrote several tickets , i fish j.p. a lot and there are several regulars that put two stringers out in the tank they are not fishing in with small fish. then if p.w. comes in they say it doesn't belong to them.they also bring 3 or 4 rods and use all of them .owner won't stop them. 4 people will take up one tank with all the rods spread out then get mad if you fish inbetween them.

I would agree with you , but then we would both be WRONG !!!!!

Justjigging,

Yes sir, I arrived as early as possible after work, got there around 10:30, really had not planned to go this morning, but wanted to get out of the house for a few hours. Fishing was competely different from last week, stayed only about forty minutes and left. That was you that normally fishes Loe Pool right, sorry the fishing was so bad today, but as you know, thats fishing. This cold front may have temporarily shut them down, but it was needed, in the long run it and other temperature drops will help.

Still, it is amazing how different it was from one week ago. Nice meeting you, hope to see you there again. I will keep you and others posted when the fishing picks up again.

I've always heard that carppie bite best in the barge when the temp drop like today. As of right now it 50 degrees and droping. I was kind of considering of going to JP in the morning and given it a try.
