There is a large deep pool at the end of the public waters below the dam. You have to fish from one side of the pool so the longer the casts the better, but there the same chance to catch them 10 yards from you.
There are very few Stripers in there so it's fishing for 1 Bite. Normally a big bite. Most days you get nothing.
Big Rapalas, Spinnerbaits, and I like to use a 1/4 oz. White Bucktail with a trailer on it. Floating or snagless lures is recommended.

Wow look at the top 50. Most of the big stripers recorded in tx were from late 80s to early 90s.

Late 80's to mid-90's gave us a lot of heavy rains and water over most spillways of striper lakes. Many big stripers went with the flows as they naturally do. The best chance to catch a trophy striper is during the winter months when the dams are releasing water long enough for the big stripers downstream to migrate back up toward the flow source in search of wounded bait - catfish do the same thing.
We use to fish December thru March at night below Texoma dam in the Red River - best chance at a real trophy. Many stripers in the 15-35 lb. range that were caught were kept. There are still a few big stripers left (Red River, Brazos River, Trinity River below Livingston and the Gaud and right now thru March, at night with flow would be the best opportunity.

On the Guad with trout stocking you would expect the Stripers to be right there waiting. Catching them would seem to be in every ones best interest.

Probably an 8-ft. rod with 20-lb. test Ande would be enough. Winter time is probably the best. Ideal water temp for stripers would be in the 52-58° range. Lots of private property so bank fishing is limited. Kayak would be the ticket and some flow out of the dam would draw the fish up closer to the dam. There are some good looking holes in that river that could hold the next state record.

http://actionangler.net/AboutUs.aspxMay want to try these guys. Use to fly fish for striper on the Luup. Striper eat trout and fly anglers would likeM all to go on the grill. http://www.justtakinabreak.com/bigfish.htmlTry a google search: "striper fishing guadalupe river" Rent a raft and float. If you happen to fly fish try a 7-8 switch rod with 10' sink tip. Big trout streamers. Swing those deep runs. From another forum "BIG Stripers hiding among the Trout in the Guadalupe River! If you want to check out a very under-utilyzed fishery, there are some HUGE stripers hanging in the deeper holes of the Guadalupe River Tailrace. You may need to sqeeze in with the trout fishermen on the weekends, but I assure you they are there. On the Weekdays, you will have some great striper water to yourself. Some of these fish are pushing 20 lbs. and are hanging around in the usual spots. 1. About .75 miles down from Canyon Dam - The first Deep pool. You might need a kayak to get here. 2. Upstream from the first wier just downstream from Rio Raft (I have personally seen some HUGE ones here!) 3. Look for deep holes, and use your usual striper techniques, you wont be disappointed if your in the area. I look forward to the pics!! Tight lines, and good eating! "

You may not need a canoe. In my college days we would just walk the bank. Central Texas has had little rainfall and canyon lake is low. This affects the cfs that they will release out of the dam. Currently the lake is close to ten foot foot low and the cfs is probably in the 60-70s'.
Your going to find them, but the deep water pools are limited. My favorite area is the first two miles of the river in the same area Super Duck is telling you about. With the cfs like it is, you can wade around in the water on some of the larger stretches.
We would use giant top water baits in the early morning that looked like rainbow trout. I would not expect to catch a ton of fish but the river has potential. You may want to bring your light weight trout tackle with you as well. there will be some holdover trout from the winter stockings in the same deep pools you will be striper fishing most likely.
good luck man!

Be careful, there are people down there who will tell you to fish using the stocked rainbow Trout as bait, when you do, RUN! Very fast! It is Highly Illegal to use Gamefish for bait to catch Gamefish! TPWD does more than frown on it, more than just fine you, they lock you up for it!
But, the fish are there, when the river is low and slow like it is now, you can see those striped logs laying in those deeper pools... Have thrown a hook at em, but I would bet that nighttime is the best time to get em to bite.....
Have fun! And let us know how you do down there!
