just wondered how many bait stores sqeeze count their minnows. i know they are in to make a profit but i guess i am used to the old time bait shops that used not pinch the tails off when they counted a dozen. is it mostly the same at all lakes.

This can vary greatly from one baitshop to the next.

Been to some that just say a dozen is one good scoop...which is usually more like 20 or so, and been to some that count each and every one of them.

When Wes and I were in at Perry Lake, Kansas fishing the Crappie USA Regional this past June...minnows were 2.59/DOZEN. They counted each and every one of them in a little red cup bang

If and when I do buy minnows, and they actually count them...I only go there once wink

Most of the bait stores on RR are very good about giving you a good count, If I buy 5 doz., I get around 8 doz..
I had a bait store several years ago that was only 1/2 a mile from my house, He would count every minnow, so I would drive 7 miles to Sanger to get my minnows. That bait store is no longer in business.

It depends on the person getting the minnows.
If I get minnows for someone that is being rude and angry, I will usually count them out.
People that are friendly and talk to you, I usually give them a good amount over what they asked for.
Lesson: Be nice to your bait guy.

I know they buy by the pound but there are a lot of minnows in a pound. maybe they think as high as gas is people wont mind so much. guess i will have to drive a little to get a fair count.

I always bought mine by the pound. Most bait shops will sell them that way and you get your moneys worth.

Not around L. Conroe. If you ask for a pound of minnows, they look at you like you just fell off the turnip truck. In most places 10-12 live minnows is what you'll get for your "dozen" at $1.89 with a couple of dead ones thrown in to complete the count.

We really don't have that kind of problem around here. Usually its more of a size issue. You ask for large, and their big'uns are little dinks!!!

I agree with Cliff. The bait stores on 377 near Ray are veryyy generous with their counts. I buy Mediums and never been unhappy,

If you're lookin for a decent count, stay away from the Oasis at J.P., and if you're forced to get 'em there, instst on gettin 'em out of the tank and not the bagged ones, specially this time of year. The bagged one you'll notice floaters just while sittin on the counter!!

Fishin barge at Lewisville is another place I try to stay away from. A couple of the guys working in there are determined to give you 11.5 when you pay for a dozen!!

On the other hand Lake Fork Resort - The folks in there will load the boat for you. I'll get a pound every trip and haven't had a problem of 'em croakin on me thruout the day!!

Not the best locations but if you have a Gander Mountain in your area, their bait shop is excellent.. Small medium and large minnows at a decent price. 5 inch shiners are hard to come by these days or atleast in my area but thanks to Gander that is no longer an issue.

I dont think i have ever been anywhere that gave me more minnows than what i asked for. everyone was either bagged or they counted them. Maybe I need to find a better baitshop.

I get skimped alot too, I always walk out of the baitshop I go to wondering if I should beat up their old Math teacher for not doing their job right.

When I ask for 4 doz and I do a speed count while they're in the bag that results in thirty-sum minnows makes me want to tell them to buy new batteries for their hearing aids.

I don't care about the price much, but just give me the damn amount that I asked for !!

Place by Pilot Point on Ray Bob is pretty good he sells by the pound and they are usually good lively minnows.

Oasis on J.B. is hi-way robbery as is the place before you get to Lake Arlington, the lady is nice and talkative but their live bait sucks. The worms are usually dead and so slimey the perch sneer at them.
