Hello all! I am new to Texas and fishing in general. I am looking for any tips/tricks/what I need/etc in order to nab my limit on trout at stocked lakes/ponds. I was out this morning at South Lakes in Denton for 5 hours without a single nibble. To make matters worse, I was sitting and freezing while watching 5 others across the pond catch no less than 3 a piece. I am looking for any help. What do you guys use? Bobbers vs. bottom? What kind/length rod? Line? Bait? What setups do you use? Any magical spells I can cast? All responses are welcome! Thank you in advance!

The best rig a spincast with 4 to 6 lb test. #14 or #16 treble hook tied to line with a small BB split approx 12 inch above hook. you can use either Berkley Power Trout bait dough bait or power nuggets. The best colors have been cheese, garlic or salmon egg peach. You can also use Berkley 3 Trout worms using a #8 or #10 aberden hook. The best colors have been flourescent orange and natural.

In line spinnerbaits like Rooster Tails work well.

Try garlic powder and whole kernal corn or cheese and garlic powder 2-4 lbs leader and very small hook the size of the corn.. Less weight the better.

Use light tackle, I never use more than 4 pound test line. When trout are not very active, use Berkley power bait in the dough baits, the more glitter/color the better. Buy some small salmon egg hooks and ball up the dough bait on the hook. Fish on the bottom like you do for catfish. Tie a 1/4oz sinker about 18" above the hook. The bait floats, so the trout will find it no problem. If the trout are more active, you can use small mepps spinners or I like using Luhr-Jenson's "Super Duper" in the smallest size possible: http://www.luhrjensen.com/products/trout-lures/super-duper

great tips ya got welcome aboard
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Try light line. 6#-8# will do here, water isn't as clear as most trout waters. Light to Ultra light spinning tackle with 5'-6' rod. If they have just been stocked, you might get them to hit an inline spinner. I would look at Powerbait. It is a bait that will float up. Trout will nibble on it at times, let them take it then set the hook, most of the time they will swallow it. Good luck and hope this helps
Rigging: 5'-6' UL or Lite rod Ultra Lite Reel 6#-8# Green line #14-#16 treble hook (this will allow the powerbait to float up off of bottom) 1/8 oz. barrell weight (about 2'-3' leader) BB split shot

I like the 1/32 and 1/24oz Mepps, Roaster Tail, or Panther Martin spinnerbaits. When they arn't bitin on that I'll switch over to the powerbait.

I've been fishing the south lakes pond in denton now for a week. Finally figured out my spot and desired bait. Make sure that you're at the North Pond (by Mcmath Middle School) and not the South Pond (south pond has fishing pier, but no trout). I've limited out the past two days in about 2 hrs, and that's with throwing back the smaller ones (that weren't foul hooked). Bait of choice for me there is the orange powerbait TROUT dough with glitter ($5 at cabelas). Light line and light tackle, fished on the bottom, lightest weight you can get on there (~ 10 inches up from hook) and still make it out ~5 yards, and make sure you keep the line tight at all times, regarless of wind. Time of day doesn't really seem to matter much, although from 2-3pm seems to be dead for the most part. Hope this helps and provides many a trout dinner for you this winter. -Chris Darden

I used some of the Gulp "corn mais" stuff I picked up at walmart with absolutely no success. As far as eating goes, I've had these trout for dinner the past 2 nights and they're not bad. They don't have the depth of flavor that a wild trout would but some sprigs of thyme, some butter, and lemon slices with the trout all wrapped up in foil to steam in the oven for 20 min at 400 degrees and they're pretty tasty. ALL bites have been on various powerbaits. I've had the best luck with the orange w/glitter and the pink doughs. All rigged on tiny salmon-egg hooks.
