I have had the best luck with z-ray lures. I took some to Roaring River and caught trout almost every cast and those fish see just about everything. It was fun - had people wanting to know my secret and offering to buy my lures. Gave most of them away to kids before I left. I caught several trout last year at Tyler State Park using the rainbow colored z-ray.

Lots of great input here, but four of the top producers for trout aren't listed. Unfortunately the best stocker baits are not readily available locally.

With the possible exception of flies, the two best baits in northern waters for big trout are undoubtedly suspending Rapalas/Rogues/Xraps, etc, and 4" tubes. Yes, metal works very well, too, as do all the worms, PB, salmon eggs, and such.

To really knock 'em dead learn fly/bubble fishing, but with propeller flies.

...but without a doubt, over the last few years, if I could only take one bait/set up, it would be Gulp eggs. I have seen literally thousands of trout, from stockers to trophies, from bows and browns, to brookies and cutts attack this bait with abandon while the rest of the anglers were getting their butts kicked.

More than the bait, however, is the system that makes Gulp eggs so phenomenal. When the time gets closer, if any of you come upon some of these little beauties, and wanna learn about technique and setup, just give me a hollar.

When they first put in those stocker fish they will usually bite on any color of Berkley Trout Bait by the second day usually the best colors are glitter yellow, yellow, salmon peach and garlic. In the gulp white and capt america. The best deep water lure is the BLue fox vibrax in the 1/4 oz. Trout, otherwise known as slimers. That is what I have caught over the last 40 yrs, living in NM. River/stream fishing I like black rooster tail 1/16 oz spinners, black 1/16 or 1/32oz jigs. If you have bugs on the shore like grasshoppers that will be the best lure hands down. I will do a simple hook on the line, add the hopper, and I get something allow it to float, usually a stick. Spawning fish, browns in October (Fall) Rainbows in Spring, salmon eggs or power bait. Spring runoff, bounce worms in the muddy off color water. Sitting on the bank of a lake, put a sinker on the bottom and up from that a hook with a worm, then a hook with salmon eggs, above that corn and eggs(or power bait). Then get your UL spin out and cast spoons and spinners (jigs). All else fails get a pistol pete and a cast-a-bubble reel it in slowly (various flies too). Oh if the water is too cold, you have to bounce a worm right on their nose in slack water.

Got a boat on a trout lake ... get a contraption called a cow bell or christmas tree (bunch of spinners on a wire), put on a rubber snubber then your hook, treble is not a bad idea. Put on a fat worm. Slow troll add weight to the swivel where you attach your line to the cow bell if needed to get deeper ... works!! Catch a fish, and you will, make note of where depth, etc. Keep trolling thru there, dumb fish. LOL

If they are eating minnows, small cranks work too, but the black jigs are really good.

P.S. One more thing I tried a banjo minnow the other day (August LOL) and caught a 20" rainbow, it was a horse very fat. I kept jerking the banjo minnow around let it do the death fall and quiver. Those bigger trout eat them minnows.

Just got back from South Lakes Park in Denton. Caught 8 between 4 and 6 pm. Got allot of strikes on both pink powerbait and orange w/glitter powerbait. Had a great time, kept two that were about 12-inches for a fresh trout dinner tonite. Gonna be tasty.

Power bait or about 1/2 a mini marshmallow on a very small salmon egg hook have been my go to baits.
