Ok. My son and I went to Ray Bob this weekend in search of Crappie. We fished primarily in Clark's and Airplane using minnows under a cork over the grass. We (I) caught about 15 fish... none of them crappie. If we were bass fishing, it would have been a great day. We didn't even catch a small crappie.

However, I have a campground reserved @ Johnson Branch for this Wed, Thur, and Friday with my son... and I would like to catch some crappie on this lake. BUT... I haven't found them. Anybody want to lend a hand and help me locate some fish? I have a small, flat bottomed aluminum boat with a 35 horse on the back... so I'm limited to taking on the open water, or long trips from Pecan creek to Buck.

Any help is appreciated.

Wondering same, anyone have any luck on shallow fish on Northern part of lake, coves? I would suspect that the bite would be good on stumps in 1-6ft, but haven't tried up there yet. Any tips greatly appreciated. I will be out there on Thursday trying to find them slabs.

Go as far west up Johnson Branch as possible. two creeks run in there. banks and brush in that area are good. Also fish around the tank dams across from the campground (They are on the map)

Fish a jig and bobber shallow (1 foot or less) and work out deeper until you find the fish.

Try to find a steep bank and fish any cover around it.

The south shoreline in the Sanger cove (Where the marina is) is excellent, particularly early and late. Fish the tank dam in rear of that cove. There's a deep hole at the right (west) end of the dam.

Lick Creek has a good deep channel and is well protected from the wind after you get in it.

The community cove just south of Johnson Branch has several tank dams in it that are good.

The Corp's brush piles will still have a few fish on them and are worth checking.

Hope this helps.

I've been there 2 weekends in a row and got blanked on crappies.. How far up did you go north past the 3002 bridge ? I hit the first two coves on the east side north of the bridge and got nothing. That would be on an AID Map the Bevers Hill and Bevers Ln area. Did you go all the way to Hwy 922 ?

I'm thinking of maybe trying it again this weekend.. Any help would be appreiated

Went past 922 bridges into the elm fork river about half a mile or so. water temp was at 68 and found them by old wood stumps about a foot down next to deep holes. suggest using micro-jigs. they were bitting like perch, really light. This was sunday and it was warm with the wind out of the south don't know if the wind change messed it up or not. good luck

Thanks for the feedback..I've never been up that far .. Are there any boat launches near there or do you have to put in at the ramp on the East side of the 3002 bridge..

I have a 19.5 ft deep v runabout and I'm curious if I can get up that far without tearing the bottom out of my boat.

Thanks again

Thank you very much. I don't really know if I own a micro jig, but I do have some 1/16 oz. Maybe those will work.

Also, the spots will give me an idea of some places to go, which is more than I had before posting the message. I will let you know how I do. Again, thanks.

BigE,
nice to hear that the big black crappie are in, last year couldn't hook one but the year before i had the time of my life in the same area but they were hitting a small red/chrt jig in about 12" , not sure what a micro jig is , i"ll try a google search, or if you could elaborate i'd appreciate... many thanks, Good Fishin, Pomoxis.

Micro-jig is the smallest jig combo. Cabelas offered a set from Wally Marshall. we were using blk/chrt and blk/red/chrt. I think it is 1/32 size. The jig heads were just lead with eye sockets set in. not painted.
Bobby the only boat ramp is at the 3002 bridge. You can get your boat up there just follow the river channel and try to stay away from the east bank when you get close to the 922 bridge it is too shallow. The trees are marked at the entrance to the elm fork. Just be careful.

Thanks for the info.. I think I'll try North of the 922 bridge per your post. Ray Roberts will get one more time from me before I venture to Cedar Creek..

I'll be launching from the ramp on 3002 so maybe I'll see you out there. I have a White Yukon & Blue/White Imperial Runabout. Look for or call me at 817-403-0000

I'd like to meet you and maybe even help each other find the fish if they moved.
