I am looking for advise on crappie fishing at night off the bank. I use to use coleman latterns and floating car lights with foam (Would drain a car battery in an hour!). That was back in the 70's and 80's Now I want to try bank fishing again. I have heard of green lights??
Any help??? Thanks!

I have been using green lights the last couple of years and they work great. Just buy you a good quality deep cycle battery and it should last all night. Most green lights only draw about 5 amps per hour. It usually takes a couple of hours before you start catching them, but once you do, you won't want to leave.

SEVERAL YEARS AGO AT CEDAR CREEK A DOCK NEAR MY CABIN HAD A GREEN LIGHT UNDER WATER BESIDE IT. IT WAS ON EVERY NIGHT. WATER WAS ONLY ABOUT 5' DEEP BUT THAT LIGHT HELD MORE FISH THAN ANY DOCK I HAVE EVER FISHED. YOU COULD SIT CLOSE AND SEE THE FISH SWIMMING BACK AND FORTH THRU THE GREEN GLOW. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TYPE OF LIGHT OR HOW IT WAS HOOKED UP BUT IF I DID I WOULD BUY A COUPLE. I COULD SEE A WIRE RUNNING DOWN A POST THAT I ASSUME POWERED IT. ------------------ GOOD FISHING. Thanks for all the replies. I did a search on this forum and found this to be a very popular topic. I even found this website on Green lights while fishing for specs/reds and crappie in Texas. http://www.fishgame.com/backissues/aug02/features/4.html Thanks again!

My son knows the guy who makes and sells the green lights. I'll e-mail my son and see if the guy has a website or if he has the guys phone number. I'll post up when I get some info either way. I don't know the pricing but don't think they very cheap at all!

Green Lights The guy has a 24" and a 48", with a single bulb in each. The 24" is supposed to run all night on a motorcycle battery. They have a life time guarantee. I can sell the 24" for run $90 + shipping /handling. Think 48" will be around $125 + shipping/handling. I have not used these so am not pushing them. If folks are interested I will get one and try it before I start selling them. I don't want to sell if quality is poor or doesn't work. My brother uses them at the jetties and catches specks and some good reds under them. I don't know at this time what shipping/handling would run cause I don't know anything about how they are packaged. Like I said, if folks are interested I will pursue them and follow-up with a report.

I use two of the shorter green lights. One on each side of the boat over my favorite cover. This summer, I plan to upgrade to the larger size light. The more light the better. One night we had four or five boats tied up in a circle over structure, and each boat had at least two of the submersible green lights out.
I cannot gaurantee that all the crappie will be keepers, but night fishing (especially in the Mid-May to Mid-September nights) will provide large numbers of crappie.

Caught my most of my whites while trolling near the Pedenales and Colorado River split, in 35 to 60 feet of water. I caught my crappie near boat docks, fishing white lights that are attached to the boat docks. The crappie were in 30 to 50 feet of water suspended. Tough to catch, but fun. I would find a lighted boat dock in the Pedenales river area and throw small tube jigs for a couple of minutes. If I did not catch then I would move to the next dock. There are only about 100 lighted boat docks in that area!!!! You had to fish VERY VERY Slow!!!
The final count as follows. 18 whites from 12 to 15" with 50/50 male to female ratio, 7 crappie from 12" to 15", and 4 bass from 12" to 16".....If my fishing partner did not get cold feet and hands, we could have limited on crappie and whites. This was my first time to catch crappie since 1985 (Lake Granger)......I will try again and post. I have digital pictures, but do not know how to post!??
