I'm with Throwback. San Angelo is worth a look. I moved here about 10 years ago and love it. Housing is more than reasonable. I would recommend one of the smaller outlying school districts for work. It doesn't take long to get anywhere here, fishing included.

If I was not so entrenched in the Houston area, I would move back to San Angelo in a heartbeat.

We came down and spent a week checking out areas west of DFW and ended up in Azle a block from Eagle Mt Lake.We have fairly new schools and at least 5 different nice lakes within a half to a hour drive w/Fork about 2 hours away.Just wish i had gotten a house just outside of city limits w/half the taxs. Some towns here are no different on taxs from the east coast.Just have to check things out before you buy.

I moved down to the DFW area 3 years ago from Mpls-St.Paul. We chose the small town of Grapevine about 25 miles north of Ft. Worth. Very good schools, a major reservoir nearby (Grapevine Lake) and an neat little historic downtown well-known in the area. The city has made an effort to reduce residential property taxes (generally 2-3X my experience in MN)by encouraging commercial development (The Great Wolf Water Park; Gaylor Texas Hotel and Convention Center). Grapevine is 10 minutes from DFW airport but the planes are fairly high when they come over and mostly take-off and land south of the airport so you don't even hear them most of the time (winds are from the south usually). I am very happy here. Seems like a good place to raise a family--but live where your commute is minimized and you will like it.

Possumilk...you can do an on-line search to discover the schools that are rated "Exemplary" in the DFW area. Some(like ours) are noted for a high level of parental involvement and support for teachers. Property taxes vary from town to town. My little city (University Park) is surrounded by Dallas but has much lower tax rate. The local Highland Park School Dist. requires all teachers to have a Masters within two years. No gangs, no thuglife people. There are several other excellent Districts in the area. Welcome!

TB, I agree you live in an excellent area, with outstanding schools. But how many teachers can afford to live there?
Park Cities has the highest income per capita in Dallas,
and most of Texas.
I was born in Dallas, raised in Dallas, and will be the first
to tell you that Dallas is last place he should consider.
Park Cities is in the middle of Dallas.
Where are the several other excellent districts in the area?
Maybe Coppell? Where else?

+1

Look into some of the northern suburbs of Dallas, and smaller cities north of them.

Plano, Allen, McKinney and the ones named above are good. My friend's fiance just got a student teaching job in Frisco, they may be looking for teachers.

North of Ft Worth you have places like Keller, Southlake, etc. Nice cities too.

Nrth of Dallas is what I would suggest (Frisco, mckinny, Plano, ect) there is alot more $$ and they pay teachers alot more, My MIL is a associate Principal at a HS in Frisco. Going east I wouldnt go further east that Rockwall or Royse City When You get out there the districts are alot lower income and pay the teachers alot less. My wife teaches out in QuinlanISD and the teachers in royse city or rockwall make around 10k more per/yr

San Antonio is a great place for fishing. You can easily fish some of the best lakes in Texas - Choke Canyon, Falcon, Amistad. There are also several great smaller lakes within an easy drive - Bastrop and Fayette. And if you just want a quick fishing fix you can be fishing at Medina, Canyon, Braunig, or Calaveras in less than 30 minutes. It is also an easy drive to the coast for some saltwater fishing.

Welcome!!!

I can't disagree with any opinions before me, there are MANY great places to live here in Texas.

We always can always use another good family to come join us.

Again, Welcome.

I'm surprised only one person mentioned Austin. IMO Austin and the surrounding area (the Hill Country) is the finest spot in Texas. I lived there many years ago and loved it. Still visit relatives there. Perfect place! Water everywhere.

You're going to like just about anywhere you end up in Texas. I have lived in both the Houston and Dallas areas. I enjoy east texas fishing lakes so Dallas is a bit closer. If you like fishing salt, then obviously Houston is much closer to the gulf. Either way, good luck and welcome!
