I know it probably has to do with marketing, business and all that...
But why in the world did Shimano move away from the Chronarch line? Specifically the 100b/bpv... And the 50mg...
The 100b is a work of engineering magic. It is tough, smooth and will cast a 3" weightless senko into the wind without a backlash. The 50mg, although a little lighter, works magic with my lighter baits...
I've had to resort to the used market for new reels as the newer Shimano reels just don't seem to measure up... Am I missing something? What reel does Shimano now market for the 100B?
Any input is appreciated... I am just a big believer in the 100B's...

Is there a reel as good as rhe Chronarch available today? I have a first-year Chronarch Bantam, and it is still as good today as it was out of the box all those years ago. My next most favorite is a Pflueger Purist, which is good, but not as good as the Chronarch. I have no idea why Shimano would quit making the Chronarch, unless one of their new reels is better.

Not exactly apples to apples. That reel is almost $500!

Shimano still makes a chronarch. Its the 100D and its an upgrade over the old ones. The 50mg has been replaced by the core50mg. It is more expensive than the old one, but is much better. They have HEG now (high efficiancy gearing) and it has a faster retrieve with the same great light weight and casting ability.

I sure wish they still made the 50MG. I fished with a Core for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I sure like the feel of my 50MG better.

Over the past several years the entire Shimano line-up has been re-designed,not just limited to Chronarch, and there are actually a number of factors which led to the design changes. The most obvious of which is that mfg tooling only lasts so long, and in the case of Curado for example it was either invest $$$ in new "old" tooling, or re-design a completely new generation of reels from scratch. Furthermore, to compare names to names, i.e. Chronarch to Chronarch is not really comparing apples to apples anymore. Chronarch was initially a $189 reel back in the day, and while it is a work horse just like Curado B, the older reels are no comparison to the new generation now out. Really, the new Curado E for example at $179 is a far more advanced, refined, bullet proof reel than the older "white or silver" Chronarch could ever dream of being. As far as upgrades, there are far too many things to list, but some of the main advantages to the new generation reels are HEG gears, larger smoother drags, shielded bearings, updated AR bearings, recessed frames and new frame materials, advanced super light spools, and "super free" is now throughout the line. One of the most asked questions I get is,"why did they need HEG gears, or bigger drags, the old ones were fine?" Answer,,,simple, they are called Huddlestons, Triple Trouts, etc etc, not to mention more and more fisherman were overlapping applications, i.e. saltwater, freshwater. Anyways, like I said, there were a ton of motivating factors, it wasn't just done to do it despite what some might say, and I agree, the lil white Chronarchs are great lil reels. Give one of the new generation reels a real chance though, and I'm confident they will impress you. Just keep this saying in mind, "don't compare name to name, they're not the same"! Your only real option is to buy used off of Ebay, reel shops, etc. I've upgraded may of my Green Curados with MG's and Chronarchs. All of the reels that i purchased from Ebay were in great condition and almost hardly used. I think I bought 6 to 8 reels off of ebay in the past several years and normally got Chronarchs for $150 to $200.
What Dan said is right on with what happened. It was a major marketing screw up on Shimanos part. Should have NEVER discontinued the old GREEN Curados, pricing was great and had the market share for a long time. They should have just added the newer models.

I just picked up a mint 100B off a forum member and I have another guy down in Houston checking for me on Monday regarding a 50Mg.
I'm sure the new reels are just dandy, but I tried out a buddies core 50mg this morning and well, I'll stick with my old silver 50mg's thanks very much.
I've also not found a reel that will throw a weightless senko the way the 100B will. I guess that I'm just set in my ways!

LOL Actually, that is what makes this sport what it is in my opinion. There are no RIGHT-WRONGS. It actually comes down to whatever works best for the individual! Good luck on your search. Dan p.s. I will be putting some mint MG50's on ebay in the next week or so, if your still looking.
