I'm fixing up a poor mans jig tying setup with a base I found at work that has an arm going up with a clamp at the end. Originally used for holding a paper being typed up again, short the paper platform now. Now all I need is the right thread to tie the jigs on with. I'm making my first jigs using different colors of feathers off a featherduster !
I can't wait to make and try out my first jigs. HMMMMM, just thought of asking around at the hospital for suture thread, just have to make sure it's not the water soluble kind !

I think Academy has some fly tying thread or you can go to a craft or sewing store and get very fine nylon thread and it will cost you 1.50-2.00 and I have tied a lot of jigs on the same spool I bought 2yrs ago.

I am cheap and a donated fly tying kit, super glue, feathers and pipe cleaners have allowed me to catch my first crappie on my own jig. It wasn't pretty, but neither was the fish. It was a total of 3" and I was as proud as a new father. Thanks to everyone on this thread for their advice and tips.

MrClyde,
Go to BPS and in their flyfishing section, on the left-back wall as you walk in, they have all the tying thread you will ever need. We use the neutral color (light brown) waxed thread, in 'D' size. If you can't find the size on the package, look for the package that says there is 100 feet of thread on the spool, and that's the one. About $1.50.

Thanks for the info guys, I was wondering if regular sewing thead would work or not.
Guy
I'd be dangerous if I had a BPS anywhere close to me ! My wife and I went to D/FW 2 years ago to visit her cousin and we went to BPS while there. I was ready to apply for their credit card and CHHHHAAAARRRRRRGGGGEEEEE !!!!!! I live in Eula about 16 miles east of Abilene. My big thrill is just going to Academy there every now and then ! They only have big 1/8 oz feather crappie jigs in either white or chartreuse there so I'm looking to make my own smaller jigs in other colors. At least they do have 1/32 and 1/64 jigheads.

Mr Clyde,
Order your jig tying supplies out of the BPS catalog. That way your wife can stand behind you and make sure you don't "over do it"

And BTW, I live 4 miles from the one in Grapevine. I'll never forgive Johnny Morris for building it there. If I'm not there at least once a week spending money, they call to see if I'm OK
