Was thinking about hitting Grapevine tomorrow. I've never been on the lake, so was wondering if someone might give me directions to the best ramp to use. I will be coming from Wylie, using George Bush for the majority of the trip.
Also, how is the lake to run? Is the main lake area pretty clean and safe?
And lastly...can't post without asking about the fishing. From what I can gather, at least from the last week or 2, is that the bass are up in the creeks with the shad. Now, they still may not be there tomorrow with the front, but I figure that's an easy place to start for my first time on it. Any suggestions on north/south side of the lake or dam/river end?
Thanks in advance!

dam end, the 2 marinas on the south side are good. safe to run everywhere except up towards the river.

Katies woods is a good ramp to use. caught fish shallow today on just about anything, jigs produced the best. I will be out there tomorrow as well, if you see a bright blue wrapped skeeter come say hi.

I haven't been out there in a couple weeks, but a good producing area is the silverlake area. Work the right side as you go into the marina. There won't be many chunks, but there are keepers.
There is a channel that runs almost the whole length of the marina varying from 10ish - 25ft deep right down the middle of the right side. Toward the end of the marina, the channel gets wider and you can be in 20+ft deep about 10 feet from the shore. Also, there is a lot more hydrilla/weeds/vegetation to hold bass now that the lake is at conservation pool.
As you pass the last boat slip, the channel deepens again then gets shallow again. If you head to the bridge and work back in, you'll be working water anywhere from 10ft deep to 1ft deep. Early morning I've gotten bites on topwaters and DD22 crankbaits along the channel edges. As the day progresses towards 9 or 10AM I've gotten hits on white/blue spinner baits in the area.
I've never had much luck on the other side of Silverlake so I stay out of there.
Like I said, it's been a couple weeks since I've been out there. I'll be out Friday morning to go over some of the areas I've caught fish in to see what the pattern is now.

I've been fishing grapevine for 35 years and I agree that silverlake marina has not been very good for me on either side. I'm sure there are plenty of fishermen who might argue this, but day in and day out I usually avoid fishing along side the marina.
I have had success at the mouth of Silverlake however you fight a lot of boat traffic and shore fishermen. Haven't tried at the back end of the cove but it sounds better than the mouth right now since there are not any flats adjacent to deeper channels at the mouth.

The cables that hold the tires in Silverlake can also hold some big fish. 1/2-3/4 oz jigs or yo-yoing a swimbait has worked for me.

Well, it looks like I missed all the new hot info! I totally skipped the Silverlake Marina and it looks like that's one spot I should have gone!
A little bit tougher of a day than I had hoped, but not bad. Only got 4 fish in the boat. 2 unders and 2 keepers about 2lbs each. Similar to many of my trips to Lavon.
I saw the biggest bass I have ever seen (in person) jump out of the water about 2 feet though. I don't know exactly how big (10+ maybe?), but it was a monster of a fish. I just happen to turn and look over my shoulder as I was crankin' a point so I could witness it. Tried to chase it down, but no luck. They don't get that big by being easy to catch I don't suppose.
I actually did enjoy the lake. It's so much different than Lavon (home lake). Water is cleaner, nice rocky areas/points, good looking marinas, varying types of vegetation. It's only the only other lake I've had my boat on so far. I'll defintely be going back.
