I was thinking of putting together a trophy trout trip with a couple of friends in Dec-Jan and was looking for some suggestions on fishing guides for Baffin Bay. I would also like suggestions on lodging and eateries in the area if you have anything helpful.

Thanks!

Hands down the best Trophy Trout Guide down here is Joey Farah--361-442-8145. If he's unavailable, contact Scott Nixon--512-694-6300.

As far as lodging, check out Bluff's Landing, it's right on the lagoon and their restaurant isn't bad either. Also, here on the Island, Padre Island Burger Company is awesome too. I could go on and on....shoot me a PM if you would like more info about the good life on the Island:)

The best guide IN Baffin Bay is Les Cobb, IMHO. He was the guide that got me hooked on Baffin Bay.

Good point BB....

Do you want to stay in Riviera or here on The Island? There are great guides that run out of Riviera too as BB mentioned above. Once you decide, call and talk to these guides and the you'll know who you'll want to fish with after to chat with them.

Fishing for BIG trout is a totally different game and you have to have a totally different mind set versus just regular trout fishing. You'll wade muddy bottoms; work topwaters and corkies painfully slowly; you'll freeze your a$$ off, but it's all worth it when you hang that trout of a life time.

Choose your dates carefully too. Always try to fish 4-5 days before or after the full moon; and/or 4-5 days before or after a new moon.

Or look at the Well's guide and it will tell you the best days. They calculate in all of the above for their fishing predictions. What they can't calculate is WIND.

We had a west wind last week down on the coast. It emptied out the bays, made for a lower low and a lower high tide, and all but made the Surf non-existent. I may learn not to like west winds.

Kevin Cochran has caught one or two trophy trout down there too. In fact his trophy trout charters are just beginning for the winter. He is a wading, artificial throwing type of guide though.

Is anybody interested in fishing the Baffin Bay Rodeo Fishing Tournament?

It's Feb 26, 27, and 28th with a dinner on the 26th.

It's a 2 day tournament, 2 man team, $500 per team entry fee, 2 trout per day limit, trout must be alive during weigh in, and all trout have to be over 20" to qualify. And trout must be taken on artificial lures only. I think they need at least 100 teams for the tournament.

And all winners will be polygraphed.

1st Place: $15,000
2nd Place: $10,000
3rd Place: $5,000

Capt. Aubrey Black is a well known guide, mostly known for the monster trout.
there are also accomodations around Loyola Beach like Baffin Bay Lodge, or Baffin on the Rocks
