What do you think is the average run at Ladybird and Emma?
How far were you cast out at the time of the run?

I think the whole idea is NOT to let the fish run to long..if you have a run!

Yes.
True.
Trying to use the info you give to determine what's the maximum line yardage I need on my spool (cast + run) = ?, so I can go with the highest #Test the spool will hold and still have the right amount of line on the spool.

The longest run I've been invoved with was my PB Buff at Emma.
I was in the water fighting what ended up being a small teen Carp, when I got a run on one of my other rods (Baitcaster). Donny had come over to help me net my fish, and he grabbed the runnning rod. He engaged the drag and the fish ran for about 10 seconds with the baitclicker (additional resistance) still on. The Fish paused, then ran off again for another 20-25 seconds. The fish was peesling line off as if it were in free spool! Donnie and I looked at eachother while the fish was going; both of us with our mouths open- We knew we had a quality fish.
Donnie held onto that fish while I continued with the Carp, then he got a run. He reluctantly handed the rod to me and ran down to get his fish. He fought, caught, landed, photographed, weighed, and released a 20+# Carp; then he came down to net my biggun.
I tell that story several times a week at work- I get excited when I think about breaking that PB.
*I was cast out about 80 yards, and the fish took out about another 40-50 yards during the fight*

Or if you get "locked" in your tent.
Still can't figure out why I couldn't get out.
That carp ran forever, and I could see metal on my EB65 when I finally got the tent open and got out..
The reel states 275 of 15, I has it spooled with 12....... That should be 300 or better......

Or, if you are buying hotdogs at the 7-11 while fishing a tournament at Town Lake, and while paying you get a call about how you just got a run...
I had to pay, get in the truck, haul butt back to the swim, park, run to the gazeebo swim, and pick up the rod! I don't know how long it took me to get back to the swim, but the fish was still there, and it took me forever to get the fish back in, as my spool was almost out of line. I am beyond big, so landing that fish was quite a task... but I did eat the hotdogs as planned!
BTW, the spool had about 300 yards of line.

I was spooled once at town lake I had 175 yds of line in my real. But I actually think it was a big catfish that did it.

Thanks for the posts. With what you told me it looks like 300yrds will do fine unless I get locked in my tent, got a craving for some dogs, or have too many fish on my lines. Great stories.
Just as a side note:
Do you think any of the Okuma Surf Rods will work for carp; Cedros, EVx, Solaris, Logitude ~all 10-12ft.
What about a 7ft Nomad? Too short for Emma or LBL?
I'd like to have something I can use for salt and fresh.

grassie, the 7 footer is definitely too short.
Go for at least 10, preferably 12.
I saw a 15foot ugly stick the other day at Academy; without a finger glove you could lose a finger on that one! It was pretty heavy, too. But, it wouldn't break!

you too huh lol at Emma a while back, it was early morning and i was dozing off in a tent cot when all of a sudden my alarm starts screaming off. Because it startled me, i tipped the tent cot over and struggled to get out, meanwhile the alarm is still on full throttle. The anticipation was killing me in that damn tent cot, and finally after i freed myself, it turned out to me some kayaker that had swam directly into my lines.....i was not pleased.....
I thank God for each day!

Jeff, I love it. I would have paid a whole dollar to see that adventure. I don't blame you for your displeasure that it was only a kayaker. They are usually too bony to filet.

They are usually too bony to filet. But it could be fun to try? There was once had a 3AM drunk sailboat captain that I wanted to try to fillet...

I had one of those Big Water Uglys, it was a monster. I landed a 74Lb Flathead with it and just missed the IL state record by 4 Lbs. I sold the rod a few years back to a guy in Indianapolis for the same price I paid for it. (Yes I have a phote of the fish, but I need a scanner.)
