What is the weirdest scenario that you have caught a crappie? Was it off of catfish bait? In a ditch? Using a big crankbait? In 2' of water in the middle of summer?
Let's hear a good story.

I caught a big crappie on a rattle trap one time. I was burning it back to the boat. In about 20 feet of water. He hit it like a wild sand bass. I don't know if this qualifies as wacky but it was unusual. If we could get crappie to hit a trap like that all the time, we would eat very well.
He is the truth, the light and the way.

OK Believe it or not! I was wading the catails on RH for spawning crappie 2 springs ago near the 66 boat ramp. Had caught several good fish, but between the sun and a need for a cold beverage I decided to head in for the day. Waded over to my partner to give him my left over bait and the several fish I had, and head in. I was making my way thru a cut in the tails to get to the bank, when I evidently stepped on a nest! A crappie jumped out of the water and landed inside the bait bucket! After gathering my wits (lots of snakes) I grabbed the crappie out of the minnow bucket, it looked like a keeper so I measured it. Sure enough it made the mark, took it to my buddy with a big o grin on my face, he couldn't believe it but had to. Anywho, grab an empty bait bucket and drag it thru the tails in the spring. Tight lines and full baskets!

I was fishing with DMC one day this summer out at Grapevine. I was slow rolling a 5/8 oz. Strike king Spinner with #4 colorado blades in blue/white. It was late in the afternoon and I was throwing it up on shore and rolling it back in slow. I was hoping for a patrolling bass. I caught about a 6" crappie and didn't even know I had it on the line. The lure wieghed more than it did. I still don't know how it got that big hook in its mouth.
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. Patton

Was fishing with my dad, he had just put a fish in the basket and tossed the basket overboard. Only problem was that the basket was not tied on and plummeted to the bottom of the lake full of crappie. We got this great idea that we would try to snag the basket with the bare hook, so i took off the minnow and was running a bare hook across the bottom in 20' water. BAMMMM- crappie hit it. Was it the smell or the shiny hook? Dont know.

Let's hear a good story.[/B][/QUOTE]
I cannot compete with the new method of seining for crappie with a minnow bucket but here goes...I actually have two stories. One day we were bass fishing and noticed a swirling motion approx 100 feet from our boat. We eased that way, casting a couple of times as it appeared to be a feeding fish. When we got within 10', we discovered that it was a 13" crappie that had attemtped to swallow a 4" bluegill and it was hung in its throat. The crappie would have surely expired but we removed the bluegill and released her! 2. My brother and I were fishing Lake Cumberland in s-east KY a few years back and again noticed a slight commotion on the water. It was in the spring and we were fishing for stripers. We had noticed earlier a slashing in the water and had noticed several large gar floating on top of the water for some time. We eased over to the fish now swimming in circles on top and retrieved a crappie approx 10" in length. It had obviously been a target of one of the Gar, as it was sliced on both sides about 3" long and bleeding profusely.

Never got the basket back, we figured if the crappie were biting that well we were wasting our time for a $5.00 basket. Needless to say we got our limit.

Was fishing dead middle of dog days when I was about 17. It was hot real hot. I figured I would run a crank bait so I started throwing it and first cast caught a bass. We were catching them almost every cast. They were nice too. You know the little 2 or 3 pounders that think there 12lbs. Well I hooked another one but it was fighting crazy. I mean darting this way then that way. It was an awesome fight. Go it to the boat and it was a 3 1/4# crappie.
Still got her to this day. Only cost me $125 to get her put on my wall.
Well I dropped her in the livewell and went back to fishing. casted out again but I was still shaking from catching that slab so bad that I backlashed. Was sitting there pulling out my backlash when I heard. "Plunk" A 5# bass had popped it off the surface. I reeled in backlash and all.

This happened while fishing for Crappie this year: Happened upon a green marker in the water at night that someone had left behind and we started to "wind" it in. It was hung on something on the bottom and finally gave way. When we got it up the weight had wrapped around an old rod and reel caked with mud. Looked like a disco era "70's" rode and reel. The reel is an old Shimano and the rod, a Lew's pistol grip speed stick. I used to have a rod just like that when I was boogie_in_on_down in the 70's! LOL

_Hey Yall: This is more about unusual circumstances. May of 1974 My Brother living in Marlow Oklahoma aksed me to move there. I was going to help him build his Farm Utility Buildings. As a bounus in my Free Time...I got to go fishing and help stock the Farms 3 Stock Tanks. _One early May Weekend it was rainy and not much work could be done so Off I went to Lake Humphrey to catch some Crappie!! I had only been fishing about an Hour when it sounded like some one out on the road was chunking rocks at the Metal/Tin (Crappie Barge) Buildng I was fishing inside of. I thought some kids were out in the park up to no good?? Well I steped to the door and opened it to holler at them to stop when a Golf Ball sized Hail Stone followed buy several more came rolling down the walkway and into the house!! _All I can say is if you've ever herd a 50 Cal Machine Gun up close and personal...it dont hold a candle to being in a 20'X 20' Tin Building in a Golf Ball and Bigger hail storm that lasted 30 minutes!! I actually found two Cigarette Butts and pluged them in my ears to protect my hearing!! _Funny part was I guess that hail ran the Crappie Up Under the Barge for cover because I could'nt pull them out fast enough!! I filled a Fish Basket and the Minnow Bucket! After the storm I went and Unloaded them into the Big Pond and went back...they were still there and I repeated the load!! Them Ponds had 2Lb Crappie in two years!! Lake Humphrey was so badly over populated with Stunted Crappie I actually did them fish a favor!! _I have caught several over 2Lbs while Bass fishing in tournaments...Caught a Male/Black Crappie in the 3 to 3 1/2Lb range on a 1/2oz Black Chart Jig'N Pig on Ray Roberts up in Airplane/ Pilot Point Cove in April 95!! Did'nt think about it at the time but it was probably a record fish that I turned loose?? _Good Luck with them Slabs Yall!! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bazztex<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I caught a 2# crappie on lake arlington one time on a 6 inch purple metal flake texas rigged worm.We then tied on some white rooster tail spinners and caught a dozen more in the same area.It was in the spring time and they were up spawning in shallow water. They quit biting at dark or we probably would have caught more.

Ok I have 2 stories. I was at Bardwell Lake is was dark and I decided to fish with a top water rig. I was popping it alons and snagged one that was comming up to feed. The second time me and my son were at Ceader Creek tied up under the bridge. He got tired and was resting in the fron of the boat. I shined the spotlight on the water shad were jumping everywhere. All of a sudden a fish jumped in the boat on his leg and landed in the floor of the boat scaring him to death! He ask me what is was and he did not belive me untill he seen it in the boat under his legs.
