I know this is off topic, but those of us that are fighting the heat and low water levels can appreciate the Ontario Canada fly-in trip that we made last week. Six of us (including three TFF members) did our annual fly-in to a small lake north of Red Lake, Ontario (Nestor Falls Outposts)and had a great week of walleye and pike fishing. Caught about 800 walleye and 200 pike and ate fresh walleye EVERY night for dinner. Weather was a high of about 80 deg and low of about 60 deg. Mosquitos and flies weren't bad at all. Caught most of our walleye just jigging with leeches and crawlers. Only cabin on the lake and they just leave you for 4 days. There are no guides but you're fine as long as you know the general spots and can bait a jig. Very comfortable 14' Lund boats with 9.9 hp mercs.

Only strange event was having a Canada Game Warden land his small float plane next to where we were fishing and proceed to write us a $180 ticket for having ONE to many fish on a stringer even though as a group we were under our limit and we were only taking enough to eat for dinner. Seems a bit of a waste of taxpayers money to single out 6 guys on a small remote lake. He also made us take him to our cabin and he checked the fridge for filets that might count against our daily limit. Other than lots of empty beer cans we were clean.

If you've never done a trip like this I'd highly suggest it. Well, back to fishing Raybob.

Master Dave Sounds like ya'll had a great time. Must be nice going fishing and not seeing anyone else on the lake. Never been fishen in Canada, but its on my to do list.I'm sure the scenery is great around the lake. What kind of wildlife did ya'll see around the lake, and where's the pictures?

I'll try to get The Grasshopper to post a pic or two. Yea, we expected to see NO ONE on the lake which was why we were surprised by the game warden. Saw lots of small game and eagles but didn't see a Moose although they are in the area. Scenery is unbelieveable. They pump the water right out of the lake into the faucet on the sink and the shower as it is that clean.

Been to Alberta and BC. Very clean country (Canada), crystal clear rivers and lakes, and cool folks. And great fishing!

I'm heading up to Minnesota in September to Lund's dealer meeting and I'm taking a rod and reel this time.

One question though. I've been told walleye are better eating than crappie. What's your opinion on the subject?

Our lake (Herod) had wallaye, pike and lake trout but some also have smallmouth. As hard as we tried, we didn't catch a lake trout.

Both crappie and walleye are very white, flaky, non fishy and VERY tasty. Biggest difference is having a thin filet vs. a thicker filet and how it cooks up as the thin filet obviously gets crispier. If you were going to pan fry a whole filet I'd vote for walleye but if you were going to drop a bunch in peanut oil I'd maybe take crappie. What we did in Canada was to cut up the walleye filets into "nugget size" and then drop them into a pot of peanut oil and it was unbelievable. We didn't bring ANY dinner food other than potatoes and ate walleye EVERY night we were there.....just a different batter each night. If for some reason we didn't catch fish we'd of had to trap a bunny for dinner.....

Awesome TRIP...and for all you non believers...YES, WALLEYE ARE 10X better eating.....I swear. Ate-em every night...and could still be eatin-em. I'm trying to add picks but may take a few tries.....
