I missed the last couple of years but not going to let this year go by. I wonder if they are going to put browns at river park this year. I know it was done by the river authority.

For those of you in Tarrant County. Is it just me or is 2700 trout in Ber Creek Park in Keller seem like a lot? that pond is not very big. Oh well more for me I guess.

I also notices Bob Jones Park in Southlake is not on the list this year. too bad since thats just around the corner for me.

2 plantings in Keller coincide with the kid's fishing derby those Saturdays.

It's hit or miss; I get more on salmon eggs. Also get them on small pather martin spinners, little daredevl spoons, and small mepps spinners.

This year I will be fishing with self tied flies .
Last year I had the best luck with an ultralight rig, 4# line, with small dark flies fished behind a plastic casting bubble. Most of my fishing was the hour before daylight which might of had some effect on the fly color.
I fished a small city park duck pond in Longview that was just minutes from where I worked.
Never had anyone else fishing at that hour.
Had multiple hits almost every cast on a steady slow retrieve.
I think the released trout have all been fed pellet food at certain times of the day but get hungry enough once release to hit almost anything that resembles food to them.

Power bait is on and off for me, over the years i've had success on it, but the colors will vary from day to day as trout are picky. I've had good success on the power eggs and salmon egg type baits. Small rooster tails have been good as well. Just remember, super light tackle!

I love trout fishing, makes me want to move back to Colorado smile

Hi,
wife and i love to fish the Canyon Lake tailrace, and also Blanco State Park, last year we caught more trout and Blanco than at Canyon.
If interested, we can set up a weekend after the release. i pretty much just use bait haven't had much luck on lures.
Ray

Hello everyone, im always up for any type of fishing trips, but especially kayak fishing in Central TExas lakes and rivers, and the coast.

Travis, I'm up here in the Dallas area, but I picked it up real fast. Get yourself some tiny hooks.. no bigger than #6. Then get yourself some orange TROUT power bait. Make sure it says trout and not crappie. Super light rig.. just enough weight to keep the hook down, on a maximum 6# line... I really prefer 4#.

Feel for the thumps. They bite about like crappie for me, just barely a little bump sometimes, and then pull. They'll give a wonderful fight for their size.. and the big ones are loads of fun!

I like Mikes Trout bait in rainbow color. I use a "Catfish" rig with a barrel weight and about 12" to 16" leader. I also had luck with a slip float rig. I do love to use the rooster tails but I can't cast so much anymore. HAVE FUN.

I am going to be in Bandera this weekend, doing a little hunting.
Some small nephews will be in tow, and I'm thinking of giving this a try.
I don't see how a cane pole couldn't work.
What kind of bait would you suggest?

Some folks swear by corn. The only thing I've ever known that to catch is carp.

Some folks swear by tiny marshmallows... again... all I've ever caught was carp.

Go get some tiny #6 hooks and some trout powerbait. They'll keep your nephews busy all day long.

I've seen as small as 8" and as large as 14". Supposedly they have released even larger in some places.

I think it was two years back, I witnessed a trophy trout caught at the lewisville trailrace. I think it was about 22-23 inches. I think i still have the photo somewhere. I posted a picture of it here on the forums a while back during the trout season, maybe i can dig it up. I swear it looked like a salmon until I realized it was a rainbow trout. There are decent sized ones mixed in, just depends on which hatchery they came from.

I've caught some up to 10-11" so far and some as small as 5" LOL

Trout fishing is great if you have kids, I take my little cousins yearly to do some trout fishin and they have a blast. Its a step up for them from fishing for bluegills smile

I guess Texas trout are pretty small, you refer in inches, in SoCal the small ones are 2 lbs and get up in the 15 lb range

PB Common = 36-8
PB Buffalo = 62-8
PB Mirror (fully scaled) 13-0
PB Flat Head Catfish = 44

haha yeah, on average, they are less than a lb in terms of weight here in TX, you'd be lucky to get anything over a lb, but thats why they limit us 5 a day...so for 5 fish, it "should" total over a pound rolfmao

This isn't anywhere near "normal" trout size compare to states out west and north have. Afterall, TX trout are from hatcheries. Trophy sized trout are a rare sighting here in good ol Texas haha.

they have the same limits in SoCal, 5 per day unless you by a second pass for 5 more, and all fish come from hacheries as well

Maybe the hatcheries here need to learn the same methods or techniques as california , cause our trout are dinks! haha

It might have something to do with the water staying colder for a longer period of time in cali, they also stock brown trout and whats called tail waggers, some type of hybrid that jumps out of the water during the fight, I tell you it is an awesome feeling seeing them flip put of the water when you are fighting them.

My biggest I have ever caught was only a little over 9 lbs but it was on a ultra light rod and reel with 4 lb test line and it took quite awhile to haul in.

How long after the stocking does it usually take for the trout to get to actually feeding?Or are they feeding as soon as they are dumped in the pond.Reason I am asking is cause I belive they will stock the pond by my moms place today.Might head out there depending on what you guys and gals may have to say.

I found it usually takes a couple of days for the trout to acclimate to the new invironment, then the feeding begins.

a good bait to use is whats called a power mouse, made of white gulp, salmon egg and worm

Dont mean to be bothersome, but this is my first try at this trout fishing.Do the trout feed at all levels(bottom, middle, top)? And Would they be so inclined as to maybe indulge in Earthworms?I know as a first time fishing for a species one should just go and learn by trial and error, but Im sure most of you here have some errors I could go ahead and skip. Thanks for any Input.

Oneeighty,

Don't worry too terribly much about depth, they tend to feed mid and lower for me, but they're all mixed up today and feeding at all levels of wherever they were just stocked.

Seriously, go to Bass Pro Shop, and look for some trout power bait. Orange or pink. Get some tiny #6 hooks, and go to town. Its that simple.

ok..in my neck of the woods they are gonna be stocking 3,160 from now till march.than means there will be a total of 9 stockings, so roughly about 350 fish every two weeks..does that make any sense?..i went there and didnt see anybody fishing. but i did talk to a man working for the city and he said they finished stocking some hours ago!..

berkley power bait or little spoons have always done the trick for me. I am going to get the gear ready tonight and hit it at sunrise.

1/16 or 1/8 oz spinners like RoosterTails, worms on a hook, or Power Bait, or corn.

I'm going tomorrow morning. They're stocking central park pond in College Station today. It will be in the 20's though. But hey, what kind of an angler lets weather get in the way of fishing?

I'm hoping they'll hit wet flies.

Powerbaits are very very slow fishing compared to small minners on bottom. But if I didnt have minnows. Id use powerbait salmon eggs. In orange or pink.

Fished for Trout in Mesquite this morning. Had one nibble, else zero Trout. Cormorant were catching and eating their limits! Did restock on Trout Bait on the way home. Found Orange and Pink Trout Bait, no Chartreuse. Today's Pictures.

Also, last year we collated field notes and reports on Texas Rainbow Trout fishing. We posted the results in an online article: Texas Rainbow Trout Fishing - Top 5 Lures and Baits for Community Lakes.

May have to take a non lethal pellet gun to take care of the water turkeys. They will mess up a pond in no time.

I fished the pond in Irving last year. There was like 30 of those things in the pond just wearing out them trout. I saw 50 eaten easily one morning.

Fished Bandera on Saturday day my 3 year old caught 3 on his own, I left him reel in like 3-4 and my 9 month old "reeled" in 5 so we left with plently of trout caught like 17 or 18 before we left.
Gold super duper was the trick they would be about 10-15 chasing until one would bite.

Has anyone fished the pond in Denton, they show to have stocked the Lake Parks pond December 3rd. Went out today and fished the North pond like they said they stocked and didnt get even a nibble. Anyone know of a good pond near Denton to fish?

So, I saw some previous post about Greenbriar park in tarrant county. Went out there for about 3 hours and left with 3 trout. Did run across a 3 foot snake though, live and chillin by the water. Didn't hang around to find out what kind! Either way, I would try out some corn or powerbait.

College Station's Central Park is pretty close. The fish in the little pond with the billfish fountain.

(in case you didn't know where the park was)
From somerville take FM 60 all the way to Hwy 6 then take it south and exit for Southwest Parkway (2nd exit you come to from FM 60/University). Go thru the light at Southwest Parkway then you should see softball fields and you turn right either on Krenek Tap or just past the fields. If Krenek Tap, take the first left to go to the ponds.

I'll be trying River Park this Tuesday. Three years ago the angler next to me caught a 3lb. on and old black martin panther with an old zebco 33. He schooled all of us "Young Bucks" as he caught this fish on his fourth cast. The trouts' tail was sticking out of the minnow bucket he brought as a live well.

I went to Bethany today from 4 to 4:30 and I caught my limit in that time. All were caught on a gold Super Duper. Cast out and count to 5 before the retrieve. I met Fshng84 as I was leaving he was coming in.

Fished Bethany for an hour today b/n 9:00 - 10:00

Slow bite, but managed a limit. All fish caught on gold super dooper

Started off I had to count bait down to 10 and sloowwwwwwwly retrieve. Caught a couple that way and they seemed to shut off. By the the end of my 1hr trip the fish had moved up(sun came out) and you could pick up your retrieve a little bit. Didn't have to countdown then. I wasted a lot of time fishing deep before I realized they moved up. Then, blammo.... finished my limit fast.

Caught 2 'green trout' to boot. One nice 2 pounder gave me a good tug.

Saw very little action among the other brave anglers..... It was 30 degrees when I got out of the truck.

Most fish were empty stomach. One was chock full of corn.
Guy near me picked up a few fish off the bottom on power bait. Then he produced a couple off a 1/16th(best guess) white jig. Looked like he was swimming the bait and not knocking the bottom with it.

Good luck everyone.
Gotta find a spot with bigger stockers.

Went back to Bethany Park in Allen today. Caught another limit of trout. This time it only took @ 45 mins. The key today was a steady retrieve and a 503 silver superduper, although one was caught on a 503 gold superduper.

Here are the five from today:

sircharles4848 and dallasloanguy. I believe that i met the both of you today haha. I was the guy in jeans and a camo sweatshirt. Nice meeting yall. Caught my limit about 5 minutes right after sircharles4848 left and just kept catching and releasing. Left them biting today around 11:20. 2 caught on pink powerbait and the rest on a gold 503 super dooper and 1/16 white rooster tail. I will be out there again around 8 or 9.

Hi Bomber1,
Had hits on the Gold Super Duper yesterday evening but too slow in setting the hook with three lost as I was bringing them in. Switched to Orange Powerbait and caught one before I had to leave but a limit would have been the case.

All,
Just re-stocked on Super Dupers, Mepps Spinners, and Panther Martin Inline Spinners. Going to see which one gets the most hits. Unfortunately, did not get any 503 Silver Super Dupers.

Field Test of Trout Lures did not pan out this evening at Bethany Lakes. A lot of surface activity but no hits on Gold Super Duper, Mepps Spinner, or the Panther Martin Inline Spinner. Switched to Orange Powerbait and limited out in about 15". Today's Catch

Made it out to Bethany Park in Allen again today. I was there for @ 2hrs. Caught another limit on 503 Silver Superduper. The bite was a little slower, although on the first two cast of the day I hung 2 fish but both got off before I could land them.

Here is a pic of todays catch.

Great catch. Super Duper seems to be pretty hot at Bethany this season! I am going to give Trinity Park in Fort Worth a shot this weekend. Supposed to be some 20 inchers ,they had last year. Then I might stop by Bethany on Sunday

I don't always catch fish, but when I do, I prefer Dos Hybrids

Super Dupers and Powerbait are staying in the lead at Bethany Lakes. Limited out on Powerbait this evening.

Should be an interesting weekend with a number of places getting their Trout Stocking tomorrow!

FYI: Did stop by this morning for a brief stop on the way to work. No strikes, so this evening's limit made up for it. Did find an article that we liked about "ways to cook a Trout"; posted a link on our Weblog .

Went out this morning to Mary Jo Peckham park in Katy and caught three, all on a small (1 1/8") silver super-duper. There were a few others being caught on powerbait and small worms.

Having grown up in Colorado where I've caught lots of wild trout, I'm rather disappointed with these hatchery trout. Their fins are chewed off, and they don't taste the same; a bit 'muddy'.

Still fun to catch, though! The three I caught were about 10" and fought pretty well on my ultralight gear.

That's a very nice 15 incher there!

Went to Bethany this morning for a few hours. There was a lot of top water activity. We were unable to get them to bite anything we had. Tried silver and gold superdupers and green, orange and red dough bait.

My friend Brandon was able to catch something at least.

A small largemouth bass....go figure:

If you can make it to the Guadalupe trophy area the trout are much bigger. I have two trips there over the last two weeks and we first stop at hucho springs to catch dinner the basic 8-10" trout then head up river for the big boys/girls. Last weekend caught 9 in the trophy area the smallest 12" the biggest several in the 18-19" range on mepps size 2 firetiger. Then went again on Saturday a tad slower managed 3 one smaller 15" and two 17-18". All on the same lure.

Posted a "Summary of Lures/Baits Used for Trout" as of 30 Dec'09. Results showed Powerbait, Super Dupers, and Nymphs/Wooley Buggers were consistent producers. Similar to the results observed for 2008-2009 Season!

Went to South Lakes Park in Denton for some trout. Got skunked. Nobody was catching anything. All baits were used. There was question of whether or not they added to the stocked trout today since it is every two weeks. They usually bite good after being stocked in that pond. Who knows could be the crazy weather.

Just talked to the TP&W hatchery guy by phone. South Lakes Park in Denton was not stocked yesterday but "sometime earlier this week". I asked what day and said he didn't know. I told him that there was no tire tracks around the pond and nobody had caught anything there so not sure what to believe.

I caught these last year at River Park sure beats the 10in fish that they put in at Chislom Park. Im Pretty sure River Park is stocked by the Water Distict not TPWD. In years past while watching them stock River Park I saw a couple of fish close to 5 ponds in the mix. Has any one fished River Park This year? Are the fish still pretty good size???

What part of the trophy area? I am new to the area and have been to the huecho springs and spillway sites(cuz their free). I was thinking of going to a pay area such as rio raft but didn't know which area would be the best.

Also I forgot to ask if it feasible to wade to the areas you referenced.

Hello all, i am a newbie... I tried a golden super duper 1 1/2 size and caught one trout on 4 hits today. 4 hits for two hours... It definitely draws 4 or 5 trouts each time, but none of them wants to take it, they just like to look. Is that because they are not hungry or am i doing something not right? I let it sink about 2 sec, and retrieve slowly.. by the way, gold one seems to work better than the silver one(prism)... I went to something rose city two hour south by driving, water was very clear.. Thanks for your tip.

501,502,503. sometimes the smaller sometimes the larger. it matters what they are hitting that day. gold is probably most consistent. never used the prism

zero action from Bethany. i was there two days ago and the day before. Before that, i know they were going crazy for bread. I wonder if it has anything to do with the position of the moon.. I saw it and it was really low and big. By the way, i wish i can catch some bigger ones other than the ones i saw at Bethany.. I might try lewisville by the dam... Any tips?

Yet to catch one out of Duncanville. Apparently they're just not hungry. Tried powerbait in a few colors, salmon eggs, corn, crickets, red wigglers, and mealworms.

I'm done til it warms up a bit. This is getting annoying frown

Try a Mepps trout kit or a mini crankbait, and find the fastest, deapest, or coldest part of the water.

Hey Guys, Has anyone had any luck at Ablon Park in Garland or Mesquite City Lake. I am going to try those two spots.

I usually like Duncanville?

Limits were being taken at Waterloo Park in Denison. Normal stockers that were very hungry. Only issue was reeling them around the ice. Had several break offs while bring them in. Today's Pictures

I live right by Northwest Park Pond in Irving So I've been stopping by and checking with any fisherman I see. Only heard of two catches there from about 30 people I talked with. Pond was almost totally iced over friday mornin.

What's the call on Northwest Pond? Should there be a good number of trout left since people weren't fishing during the cold? I live down the street and might go check it out.

It's raining here in San Antonio and I'm wondering if they delay stocking. I plan on hitting Brackenridge after work and hope to fine some hungry trout waiting for me.

Its pretty easy to get small ones outta the spillway. I have caught five everytime I've gone there. I haven't tried huecho springs or the other spots below rio raft. I have tried other places down from the dam with no luck. I used gold and silver superdupers. Other people were using powerbait and worms and doing OK, but I usually catch five with the supers before the bait fisherman catch two or three. Just throw 'em across and count to about 5 and reel in nice and slow. I've only lost a couple on snags but they are there.

I forgot all about the Brackenridge stocking. Let me know how it goes. I sent TPWD an E-mail asking to see if they are still on schedule and will let you know when I hear from them.

UPDATE:
TPWD responded rather quickly today. The truck should have already been to Brackenridge and tomorrow they will stock Miller's pond, rain or shine.

buddy of mine was there this morning along with the truck. took him a while but he got one and is meeting me back there later today for more. got me a superduper and some other spoons so I'm hoping to do alright.

funny thing.. Academy was all but sold out of superdupers the other day. all they had left were the smallest ones.

I am sold on superdupers. I will go to different stores until I find them and I use the smallest size they have, usually one and one eighth inches. It probably is me buying 'em all up LOL

i think I'll skip Miller's pond. Brack is only about 1.5 miles from my house.

thanks for the heads up though.. thinking I'll hit the Guad on Sunday too, and i guess i should grab some extra superdupers just in case.

They have stocked Cedar Hill perch pond at the state park with fingerling to 6 inch trout, so dont waste your time unless you want to keep 5 baby fish!

Last time I went to miller's pond they had a little bit bigger fish. Of the five I caught, the smallest was nine inches and the biggest went a tad under fourteen. no monsters but better than some of the littler ones they are putting in other places. I am going to hit brackenridge in the morning, then I have to go to the doctor at noon.

In these ponds, since they are not in there local habitat, are there patterns different. Im used to the best trout fishing being at dusk and dawn and the night fishing being nonexistant. I was wondering if it would be different in this cast and maybe I could catch some at night. What do yall think?

so Brack was a skunk for me yesterday evening. one bite on a nickle superduper.

all they seemed to want to eat was cheese.

a buddy of mine did manage to pull one in on a tiny crankbait, but that was it for us.

Guadalupe River: Please note special regulations are in effect from the second bridge crossing on River Road upstream to the easternmost bridge crossing on FM Road 306. In this area, there is an 18-inch minimum size limit, a one trout daily bag, and the restriction that only trout caught on artificial lures may be harvested. Anglers may fish with all other legal means and methods, and may harvest all fish except trout. (Both the rangers and the fishermen will call in any infractions as this is a viable year-round trout fishery---- just a freindly reminder)

Oneeighty,
Stick with the worms. No one over the age of 14 should be fishing with "power bait"... Great for kids, but an embarassment for adults! You can get a cheap fly rod at most tackle shops. Google it up, and you will find a five weight will be great for all kinds of Texas fish. But for Gods sake, dont listen to these people about corn and marshmallows!!! (Unless you are under 14)

4 of us caught our limit in about 45 minutes today on gold super dupers. All fish were 12" to 14".

That's a very nice 15 incher there!

Then let them go!?

I must be an embarrassment, because I was taught at a young age to use the the easiest method that provides the best results without spending an excess of money. If corn, powerbait, night crawlers or super dupers work I will use them, and will leave the fly rods to the so-called 'adults'...

+1 steve. But what do I know. I'm just a girl. Its a Man's sport to get out there and wave the longest .... fly rod.... he can buy and say what a good sportsman he is.

This is what I have learned as a new freshwater fisherman, a successful one at that lately (speaking trout now). If it's windy at all or cloudy, I don't even bother. Those are the only days I have been skunked. Good late afternoon sun with no wind means a limit in an hour. Maybe the superdupers gotta have the light to be effective. Powerbait is garbage unless catching tiny trout is what you want to do. Size 501 superdupers hit more trout. Size 502 have gotten me bigger trout (12"+). If they don't hit silver, they hit gold. I use the holographic stuff. I read all the trout threads here as my research before I went out and bought all sorts of stuff including clear bobbers, powerbait in salmon egg peach, nibbles in chartreuse, PB trout worms in bubblegum and chartreuse, superdupers in gold, silver and white, tiny crank baits in various colors, Mepps spinner baits, rooster tails and so on. I know, a lot of stuff but I was coming off a horrible streak of luck and was willing to try everything. Hell, I had corn and cheese too. The only satisfaction I have gotten was on superdupers and tiny Mepps spinners. I favor the superduper because I can't get the tiny spinner out very far free lined. I can get a good 30 yards or so on a 502 superduper with ultralight tackle.

Thanks for the info Bass fro chop. I've caught a few dinks before at bethany, i just wanna catch some bigger ones. I saw some pictures on the internet with people holding what looks to be at least 15 inch trout. I might give one more shot at trinity with my friend this weekend.. My wife don't wanna join me any more though.. smile I really can't blame her..

Limiting out on brackenridge park every trip there. The rain/drizzle washed a ton of trout down the san antonio river into the natural areas and they are schooled wherever the water is 3-4 ft. They are biting everything -- power bait, salmon eggs, super dupers, spoons, spinners, jigs, marshmellows, crankbait, etc.

You have to get out of the park area. If there are water fowl, then there are no trout, they are all eaten there!! The natural parts of the river there are no birds and no one fishes it.

Cool thing is you can hit a ton of panfish and if you're lucky a largemouth with trout lures too.

How big are the trout they put in there? So you mean to head towards the golf course down past the train station right? I wanted to take my kids there but nothing going in the park.

Do you mean the Mulberry/River Road area? Or farther south?

I was just in the natural area of Brack yesterday and yes that is where they are and they are hitting everything. my best luck was with a tiny crankbait and a tiny minnow, but they were going after everything. i only left with 3 trout but we were tired from getting skunked at the Guad that morning and were not at Brack long. The Bass were fun too.

they are up river from Mulberry/River Road all the way to the low water crossing bridge.

Its actually a lot nicer that they are in a more natural area now. the fishing is better and the fish seem healthier.

if you are going down there, skip the cheese and throw a lure. way more fun.

Went to Greenbriar Park in Ft Worth today and caught my first trout this year. I've wasted almost 10 hours at Randol Mill back when they first stocked it (fishing in 23 degree cold), and caught nothing.
There were up to 10 people fishing there and I saw about 20 fish caught in a couple hours.

just for curiosity, how come trouts at trinity park are bigger than the ones being caught at other ponds? they are all stocked trouts, no? I got skunked again at trinity yesterday, not a single bite.. Tried, superduper, panther martin, power bait... NOne worked... On the way home, stopped by the bear creek. Action was good, but they were all small trouts.. I released them as i was not in the mood to clean a little dinks... check this out, they are no dinks... http://www.urbansportfishing.net/id12.html

From what I have seen of this years east Texas stockings, they are all babies, probably just stocked to feed the bass. I have yet to catch one over 12", and most have been 8"-9". Less like pan-fish, more like fish-stick. But the kids like to catch them. smile

Anybody tried the ponds just stocked around the metroplex (samuall farm, town lake, northwest lake etc) after the rain? Not sure how the rain and cold weather affect them. Thanks.
